The scenario is: the laptop is not connected to any lan and the wireless is disabled. Are you saying that I can still grab files from the desktop to the laptop? I don't think so.

Juli:

You need some sort of connection to do what steve described - wired or wireless. You could also set up a home "workgroup" network but that again requires a connection between the two computers (though not necessarily a connection to the internet).

The way you have things, you're looking at a thumb drive or hard drive transfer - but if either is connected to the internet, you run the risk of transferring infected files every time you connect. That means you need antivirus - and to keep that updated, you need an internet connection. It's a vicious circle.....

Julie,

I am running DS beta .o64 and I downloaded and installed the latest windows update. I still have my EA fonts.

Juli, following this thread ther has been a lot of good advise, but I would agree with some, for a quick fix and the ability to transfer files, just get a thumbdrive. For less than $20 you can get a 2GB and that should hold several hundred embroidery designs. Just put it in you laptop
copy the files you need then run it downstairs to the XT computer and copy from it.

If the problem is only one port for LAN then you can add another card, for a second LAN and it should be less than $20 and very easy to do if your brave enough to crack the case and insert the card, or you can spend closer to $50 for the cheapest 4 port switch you can find, (its Like a router, but not a sophisticated) and then you can addthe XT and wirelss adapter to that and you should be able to connect still. But it really sounds like taking the time to mark and track the latest software and re-install the OS and DS is the best thing, it's almost as if if ANYTHING changes on the computer you run the risk of the new change moving or overwriting something then OS and DS just throw up there hands and say "I'm not playing anymore" It's a hassle but I definitely think it is a fixable problem and then you get both working again like before with all the fonts intact.

Good Luck.
As I sit in here in 40 degree fog thinking I'd like to try troubleshooting in Hawaii weather instead.

Final Update!

Finally called Melco. They said it sounded like a Dongle problem. I deleted all alphabets and reinstalled the alphabets and program. I got the fonts back.

I know this has something to do with Live Designer and the Dongle I received for that. I am so glad that it isn't the Windows update and I can still have my home LAN!

Thanks so much for all your advice. Isn't this fun!!!!????
