  • Help Please - ISO All Cotton, Button-Flap Pocket Woven Shirts

A client of ours is looking for a very particular shirt (aren't they all?). He would prefer Carhartt, but they've redesigned the shirt style he likes. The current Carhartt #S200 Chambray in 4.5 oz. cotton is the "look" he wants, but it too thin/lightweight. I believe the older version of this shirt was 5.5 oz. cotton, but Carhartt no longer carries it. Client’s business is ship building and he and his crew literally wear right through their shirts very quickly.

Looked at industrial work shirts, but no 100% cotton or heavier fabric. Looked at denim - no flap-button pockets found. Looked at other types of workwear, but so far haven’t found the right combination. Client may settle for Carhartt #S09, a long sleeve 8 oz. heavyweight twill, but that's a bit heavy for the summer months.

    The shirt must have:

    - 2 flap-button pockets (front chest)

    - be 100% cotton, mid-weight or heavyweight fabric (5.5 oz. or more)

    - available in short and long sleeves

    - preferably light blue (like a light blue denim) - other solid blues and/or khaki is OK, no stripes or plaids

Any and all suggestions and sources would be VERY much appreciated!

    TIA!

    Carole

If they're ordering enough, you might make them. Sanmar has a custom program.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dorothy. Unfortunately our client needs less than 2 dozen and his budget wouldn't allow for custom shirt quantity and price.

If you can find the shirt with the pockets but they don't have the flap, you could actually order and extra shirt and make the flaps. I've done that before and just charged more for the extra shirt and the time it takes to make them. If you don't sew I'm sure you could find someone to do it for you. My customer was very happy with the product. And actually they were the Blue Generation shirts. They have great quality there.

One more thing, BG does still carry a shirt like that but the colors are limited. They also have the same shirt on clearance but those are even harder to find. I ended up ordering all long sleeve and cutting the sleeves off of some of them too just to get the color they wanted. A lot of trouble I know but worth it if you charge for it.

Thanks for mentioning Blue Generation, Sue. I saw that shirt a few months ago in one of their old catalogs. Gave BG a call this afternoon and they still have some in stock - marked way down. I sent the info to our client. It's not their "perfect" shirt, but sure is close. Thanks so much for your help!

              Best Regards,

What a great idea, Dianne! If our client continues to insist on those Button-Flap Pockets, I may give it a try. I definitely will contact our local seamstress to see what she'd charge. Would do it myself, but just no time. Thanks for your creative input!

If you end up buying some of those shirts from BG that are on special and they don't have quite enough in stock let me know. I bought a bunch of them a while back and have the pocketed flapped shirt in LS in khaki,lt blue, forest green and white. Not sure what color you are looking for, but I may be able to help you out. I think I only paid about 4.00 apiece for them but I'd have to double check that.

Thanks for the offer, Dianne. Not sure yet if our client is interested in the BG shirts, but may I contact you privately to find out what you have on hand?

                      TIA!
