  • Magnetic sided bobbins

My Amy, as she likes to be called, is an original big red. Frequently I get offers for magnetic sided bobbins. Are the recommended for this machine? Does anyone use them and like them?

I have some made by RA but haven't used them yet. I know that Joyce Jagger uses them in her machines, but they are not Amayas. If you do use them, you must take out the backlash spring from the inside of the bobbin holder. I know that the magnetic bobbins are noit recommended for the amayas, but then, maybe there weren't any at the time the Amayas came out. I do know that they are less expensive than the other brand that has the magetic core because you get 144 per box, not 100. That's a big difference!

I use magnacore bobbins exclusivly they give great results, I find they are very consistant in their tension at the speeds the amaya sews.

      I will never go back.

      and NO lint at all.

      un like the cardboard sided..

I'm not sure why you think you need to remove the backlash spring. I haven't and the magnetic core bobbins work wonderfully.

We were told magnetic bobbins wouldn't work, We now use them all the time with great results and you DON'T remove the spring. That's all we buy Bill

The anti-backlash spring is only meant to be used with the metal bobbin spools that you wind yourself.
Fil-Tec recommends that you should remove the anti-backlash spring (if it's even in your bobbin case) so that you get full magnetic contact between the bobbin spool and the bobbin case.

I have inquired with several at Melco as to why the old Melco Mart catalog said that Melco doesn't recommend the magnetic core bobbins with the Amaya... and yet they sold them. All I've gotten is that to date, no one at Melco has yet done any extensive testing between the Amaya and any other specific bobbins, other than the good old fashion cardboard sided Coats & Clark bobbins that Melco sends out - OR USED TO SEND OUT - when Melco Mart was in swing. Of course, now new customers are receiving a handful of cardboard sided bobbins from Madeira in an unmarked clear ziplock bag.

My shop has been using the Fil-Tec Magna Glide bobbins since 2005 and we haven't skipped a beat with respect to bobbins. I've always preached that you could use anything you want in place of your bobbin from dental floss to Mardi Gras beads if you understand how important it is to have "smooth and consistent" bobbin tension while sewing.
Go ahead and use any bobbin you want as long as you can achieve "smooth and consistent" tension. Use the Chinese knock-offs, generic brands, or cheap grade of bobbins and you'll need to clean your bobbin case more frequently, check your tension more often and occasionally have to throw away troublesome bobbins. If you're okay with this, then more power to ya'.
I've even seen magnetic overlay-cardboard sided bobbins made by some company, in what I would believe, is to get around the Fil-Tec magnetic core patents. Maybe they work, who knows. Maybe some of you guys on the list can tell me. I just don't have the time to worry about trying something new to save a few pennies.

Personally, I'd rather spend the extra pennies and go with, what in my opinion is one of, the best bobbins and charge the customer for only the best quality supplies. ...And minimize my headaches. Also, from what I hear, the NEBS brand of bobbins are also great but my issue with them, or at least last time I checked, the end of the bobbin thread line is tied to the center of the spool with a knot. This results in a violent thread break when you run out of bobbin. But at least you know you're out of bobbin from across the room.
