  • Motorcycle patch fabric

I am trying to identify and find, the fabric that is used for motorcycle patches. It feels like velvet, stiff like felt, no merrow edge, and does not fray. Any Ideas?

I am looking for it, too. I think it is called "flock" - made in China (of course) and I haven't found a supplier. I believe you are talking about the fabric that Harley uses on their patches, right? If you have any luck, let me know. twinsmom

I know that STAHLS offers this thermo flock stuff but that would have to be heat applied to heavier fabric because it's not sturdy enough to hold up on it's own. I don't think it's what you're referring to though, since it's really rather thin.

'FLock' on its own is not a fabric-it is finely cut threads that are sprayed on material and objects to make them fuzzy. One of the last remaining 'flock plants' is here in Claremont (or was, may be closed now) If you ever had one of those early 'bobblehead dogs' in your car that was fuzzy, that is what is sprayed on after a layer of adhesive to make it have that velvet feel. Still used in the automotive industry and some furniture.
Just FYI in case anyone is wondering. But 'flock' is not a 'cloth' or material itself although it can be PART of material-I had a bag of it that was used in screenprinting years ago. Screen the adhesive, sprinkle the flock on and let it cure and you had 'fuzzy' lettering.

Signman - right you are. So where do we find fabric that has been "flocked" all over? twinsmom

It's called Velveteen. We used to use it but got away from it. Twill is much better IMO.

It sounds like somebody flocked some scrim -- that athletic felt that is used on lettermen's letters, school years, etc. That would keep Signman busy!

I've been using Stahl's poly twill fused to crinoline from JoAnn's for my patches.

I'm new on the site and in looking for wisdom on using velvet saw your inquiry about flocked fabric. We use it for appliques for church vestments and had to buy the colors we wanted by the roll from the manufacturer(fifieldfabrics.com). We have plenty of royal blue, white, ivory, and brick red and would be glad to sell you a small piece. Let me know if you're still interested.

You can also get small yardage in limited colors from La Lame in NY. They call it velveteen, which is technically a misnomer. Contact edschneer@lalame .com for info on currently available colors.
