  • Holloway - frustrated

I think there was a post a while back about Holloway and the trouble some people had in dealing with them. I have to share my recent experience with you folks to see if this is a one off, or this is the way they do business.

As a background, I've been in the embroidery business for 2 1/2 years with 2 AMAYA XTs working out of a 600sf room in my house. My wife does it full time and I pitch in during evenings and weekends. We are probably doing $35K a year in sales now and growing pretty fast. We are NNEP members and deal with many suppliers but Holloway keeps refusing to sell direct to me.

Here's the details from this weekend. I need to share this story with you because I still can't believe it happened. The sales rep's name is Bill Skene. He is also my local rep for Boxercraft and Soffe.

The ISS show was in NJ this past weekend so my wife and I went there. I wanted to stop at the Holloway booth to complain about not being able to order direct from them. While waiting to speak to the head honcho (I think he was the sales manager or some other big title), I glanced over and noticed my local sales rep standing there. We had never met, but he and my wife had had several conversations over the past 18 months on the phone in which he kept telling us no storefront, no Holloway.

I finally talk to the big guy and tell him my issue. He says there is no rule at Holloway about storefronts and seemed a bit surprised. He did say that every local sales rep can run their territory as they see fit with no oversight from corporate. I told him that it sounded like a stupid way to run a company but he suggested I go talk to the rep directly.

So - I wait a few minutes and go over and introduce myself. He looks at my badge and says "Mr. Sew & Sew, I don't think I've met you before". I tell him who I am and that he has refused to deal with us. He tells me it's because we don't have a storefront. I tell him the bigwig said I didn't need one and he says, "well that's true, you don't, but it has to be your fulltime business". I tell him my wife works on it full time. Then he makes a comment about how he doesn't like selling to Mom and Pops because they usually end up divorced. I'm getting pretty steamed at this point and I see the big shot listening but not stepping in. I tell him that I have the Holloway catalog on my desk with every item marked up to show a competitors product so I can direct business away from Holloway since he won't deal with me.

He shrugs and recommends I go buy from my local competitor who is a Holloway dealer but wants to charge me full retail price. I even offer to pay halfway between wholesale and retail, but he wants no part of that. I accuse him of getting paid off by my competitor to not sell to anyone in the area. At that point he says in a very loud voice, "Go open a storefront and then I will deal with you." I tell him and the big wig that if I can grow my business to opening a storefront without using Holloway, then there is no way I will deal with them later on. He says even louder "Okay Mr. Big Shot, if you think you are so successful, I will open your account on Monday. If you don't do $10,000 in orders with me in the first year I am closing the account." At that point I tell him that I will continue to order through other people so that he doesn't get a dime of my business.

Frustrating, and I had to share it with you. I can't understand how somebody like that works in sales. I'm wondering if I should go direct to Holloway on this although I really don't want to give the company any business. Has anybody else had problems like this?

    thanks

Thanks for the horror story. As a former route salesman for the #2 largest frame company in the US, I found this happening with different companies and reps at many places. With my own graphic business for 20+ years now, I've run into similar situations myself. I've also had similar conversations in loud voice at trade shows with reps or salesmen that felt we weren't 'big enough' to buy from them! One salesman for a New England sign supply insulted my wife when we went to his company showroom for a demo so bad she walked out! I spoke to the OWNER briefly and said we wouldn't be back. One of their other salesman had seen it happen, quit them a month later to work for a competitor and called us up...we ordered a $15,000 printer from him immediately!
The first company had inside sales desk call us a few times wondering why we didn't get anything from them like we had been....I told them right up front what happened.
Unfortunately bad salespeople work for almost every company and you'll run into them...even with Melco. But that's another story.
Now that I know how Holloway has treated you, just 'for principle' we will put their catalog on the bottom of the stack in the back of the drawer...and use it only for comparison.
Plenty of other suppliers to choose from!

      Wow... what a jerk.

I would go out of my way to find other suppliers offering similar products. I just don't understand companies like that and the fact that the bigwig didn't step in shows Holloway just doesn't give a crap about people like us that make up the majority of this list.

I have had this happen to me twice. The first to not give me an account was Delong. And that was the direct result of "the Big sports store" in town contacting the sales rep and telling him I was bidding against them for a job they were already promised.
Unfair? Yes. Was I pissed? Yes. Did I get the job anyway? YES!
The second was Pacific Headwear. They felt this area was adequately covered by "the BIG sports store". So the customer chose a different hat. Again, I got the job in the end.
Holloway was not a problem to open an account with them. Yes, I do have a storefront. But, I honestly do not remember being asked if I did or not?
I am sorry to hear you were treated so poorly by Holloway. But no great loss. They are plenty of companies out there that are more than happy to sell their products to you. And if your customer REALLY has to have a Holloway product, I for one would be more than happy to order for you and have the items dropped shipped to you.

        Have a great day....

          Tom,

It's not just Holloway, I had that experience over and over when I worked from my home and even after we got a store front. I could go into detail but I won't. Bottom line is, they need you, you don't need them. There are plenty of distributors out there. By the way are you still buying Boxercraft and Soffee from this guy?

Steve - no, I refuse to buy from any of those three companies because of him. Over the last two years, I've lost some business when the customer had to have that product but I stand on my principles.

While I think quality of work is very important; customer satisfaction, honesty, and fair dealing go a long way in this business. In the meantime I have been able to get drop shipments from other generous people on this board when I had to have a certain product and I am very thankful to them for doing that for me. This board is great not only for the information sharing, but the generousity of people with their time and help.

But no, even if Mr. Skene called today to open an account with no strings attached, I would somehow go around him because I don't believe in treating anybody the way he treated my wife and I. I once left a car dealership because of the way I was being treated and wound up paying $200 more for the car somewhere else, but I felt I got treated properly. I then bought 3 more cars from that second dealer.

Once I gather up the responses to this thread, I will take out everybody's names and send an email to Holloway senior management regarding this issue. Everybody started out small at one time and they don't seem to get it.
