Looks like I am looking at a new computer to run the XT. I want a tablet PC, and my computer tech tell me that it will have Win 8 on it. Will this run the XT (About 6 years old)? Or am I going to have mega troubles?

not right now.
You can ask for the OS to be windows 7
windows 8 is nothing more then an attempt to make PCs work like cell phones.
I for one will not be upgrading. Windows 7 is great and 8 is just a money maker for microsoft.
JMHO.

I am a full-time computer tech and part-time embroiderer. I have tested Windows 8 in beta and DesignShop 9 would not load on it. I think this O/S would be great for tablets and phones but not PC use. Everything has been redesigned using tiles. Personally, I did not like it and will be sticking Windows 7

Thanx, Steve, I found great comfort in your post.
Just last week, I bought a Sony Vaio PC model SVE 14AE 11W, with Win 8, to be my client demo machine for my Big Red.
BIG mistake! Hadn't installed DS9 lite yet, but it has already seriously malfunctioned, just as a general computer, and this malfunction ocurred after I had inserted a SD card of photos.
Here, in Oz, it does come with supposedly excellent back-up, but travel circumstances have kept me from following that up yet. Soon, I hope.
Even in the few days before it malfunctioned., I can't say I was thrilled with it.
At this stage, I could not possibly recommend Win 8 for anyone, let alone an Amaya embroiderer.amayaki

First, let me say I'm typing this from a new Windows Surface tablet. I was skeptical but I have to say I am really liking Windows 8 so far. I played with the betas and the finished product is better.
Also let it be known - that Stardock is releasing a $5 program that will have win8 boot into the desktop you all are familiar with directly... so if melco makes it compatible, design shop will be able to be run just as it has on a desktop that looks pretty much the same as you are used to now.
Personally I hope they keep developing and make it Metro compliant - even if it takes a while.
Having also used a Windows Phone, there is a level of comfort between the tablet, desktop and phone.
If you all think back to the first time you used a cell phone, pda, smartphone, iPad, ipod etc, everything takes a bit to get used to. Windows 8 is no different,John Yaglenski

Ah, yes John, a webmaster might be expected to be adapt to the Giant Leap Forward that Win8 supposedly is, in a single bound, but I am a mere mug-punter, suffering from chronic anerdism.
'The Customer is Always Right' analogy must apply here, and the Win8 folk had better not blame the customer, but should search for and listen to feed-back from the bewildered and confused.
Somehow, I have become entirely locked out of the Win8 on my new Sanyo. I can't get into it to even search for help, let alone be able to understand the help instructions which, when I could get into them, seemed to be written from an assumptive point of view. It was over my head.
I guess I could spend several hours trawling through youtube videos for help, but, like many embroiders, I have another life away from machines and keyboards.
I hope you can keep up regular Win8 help notes, John, 'cos as you've read, a lot of us are lacking in your technical aptitude, but as we have made the investment, and would like to know how to learn it.
Meanwhile, I wont be able to use the new
Win8 computer to demo my designs next Tuesday.amayaki
