  • underlay on letters in DS

If you're using a zig zag and an edge stitch underlay on lettering (nothing big, like 1" or so),
which makes better embroidery sense -- putting the edge stitch first or the zig zag underlay first?
Embroidering on average to heavy fabrics.

why are you using each style of underlay?

an edge walk is great for helping define the edge and keep layers from blending. If you us a 4 of 5 point the default is 10 pts.

zig zag is good to hold things in place but you may not need both.

If I use both I do the edge at 4 or 5 points and the zig zag after that it then rests on the edge stitch that is if you set it to a 4 or 5 point also.

      Thanks Jerome!
I make a lot of patches on a wool fabric so it has a bit of "fuzz" on the surface that I want to "rise above". (especially with white thread on a black wool background) Sometimes I use a double zig zag. On large letters, I use a fill underlay. Any other suggestions?
I'm going to try your technique of a close to the edge, edge walk first then the zig zag -- it sounds good.
