What kind of shirts (woven, knit)?
    How big of a monogram?
    What sort of font?
Are the cuffs interlined or stiffened?

The shirts are woven the height of the letters would be 5mm,any standard font and the cuffs are interlined.

      Thanks

That's a really, really tiny monogram. Maybe try with a regular straight stitch or a bean stitch. According to the Code Sheets in DSv.7, Micro Times and Micro Block have a minimum size of 5mm on wovens. Recommended density is 4.0. If you're using Design Shop, you can pull up the code sheet from the Text Properties box and see what the digitizers recommend.

I'd probably use a single layer of tear away backing for stabilization.

You're about to learn that there are no hard and fast rules in embroidery, only a lot of guidelines and opinions.
