  • FYI - Universal Format

When I downloaded the last update to DS9 I lost the ability to save in lower versions of DS. I have now found that when I use DS7 to open a design created with DS9 after the last update it opens fine now. The design shows to be ofm but when opened in DS7 the objects show expanded.

I checked and the designs I created with DS9 before the last update must now be reopened in DS9 and saved again in order for DS7 to open them. At first I thought I wasn't going to like the change but it is working very well. No more error messages saying I must save the design in a lower version if I want to use DS7.

Now that Juli helped me with my jpg saving problem I don't think I will be using DS7 any longer. I did not think I would be able to say that any time soon but now I can.

I do still have some 'freezing' issues in DS9 occasionally but I have trained myself to save, save, save after everything so I rarely lose much at all now.

I have not really used the lettering much in DS9 so I will try that today. Can you tell me more exactly what happens in DS9 universal format on your lettering?

When you day 'all lettering property's are lost' does that mean size and type of font too?

Thanks for pointing out this issue for me.

      Marcelle,

The new "universal format" in DS9 saves two copies of the design in the file. It has the OFM information that can be read by DS v9 only and an expanded copy that is read by all other versions of DesignShop. The expanded design information is exactly like opening an expanded file. That is why all of the objects appear as expanded in the list. There is no wireframe or lettering information available.

When a version 9 .ofm file is opened in a lower version of DS it will always sew out exactly as it was saved. All fills, densities, lettering, etc, will be correct. Unfortunately you will not be able to edit the design as wireframe.

It's confusing. I hope this helps a little.
