  • Rotary Logo

    Hello everybody!

I was wondering if anyone out there knows where to find a good Rotary International embroidery.

    Thanks in advance!

I believe that you need to be licensed to sew out the Rotary Club logo. I am not sure, but you should check into that to avoid any possible legal hassles.

        Markus:

I searched around for you but didn't really find it to buy anywhere. That being said, for $30, the good folks at ArtWorkSouce.com can do the digitizing for you as long as you have a copy of the rotary logo. Tell Corey or Kendra that AmayaUsers.com sent you. They're real nice folks.

A nice full size version can be found here:

        and here:

Best of luck and Good Sewing to you!

If anyone is worried about 'copyright' or 'license' to use logos and designs...it's been the subject of many discussions and articles in various magazines (signs, screenprinters, etc.)
            Here's the gist of it...
you/we cannot just use copyrighted logos for 'retail'. (That means, you cannot go putting Ford or Winny the Poo designs on hats, shirts, and then sell them). BUT...what you are allowed to do (and you can confirm this with ASI, PPAI, UPIC sources) as an 'advertising specialty supplier'...you ARE allowed to take ORDERS from dealers, clubs, etc. to produce items for THEIR use (teams, sales departments, uniforms, etc.)with no problem. There are only a very limited number of organizations or businesses that restrict to the nth degree who does their logo. (And, CURVES is one of them!)
So, if the local head of the Buffalo Bull Shooters Union wants embroidered aprons for the Buffalo Chips Toss-off, you can do them-he can order for his club. BUT if a Buffalo Bull Shooter wants a BBSU logo to put on his manure spreader or pickup truck...you have to get permission from the head honcho-usually the 'secretary' of the organization will have the 'media file' for their logo that says who can use it and who can't.
And, trust me...the horror stories are true-don't ever get talked into doing ANY DISNEY character for anyone, anytime. Daycare centers have been forced legally to repaint entire walls because someone thought a Disney scene would be nice to have on the building...decorated vans have been forced to strip off Disney characters before they were allowed to leave Disneyworld...I know a shop that did it for a customer and they drove to Disney...had to strip the whole job off when they got there! That's what 'retail' is...that customer had nothing to do with Disney.
Your local favorite ball club, Red Sox, White SOx, etc.-you can't touch their logos for nothing...without paying for a LICENSE to do so.
            Please be careful!

I am curious to know if copyright laws apply to a public institution like the University of Oregon Duck logo? Anyone know how school logos are dealt with in the copyright law?

                Dennis,
When I checked into Boise State for a "unique" item I was going to do, there was a application of somewhere near 36 pages to fill out, send them a sample of what you are planning to do (which has to be different from anything anyone else has done in the past), and pay a $500 fee to submit an application. If you get an approval, then you pay annual fees of several thousand dollars---which varied from college to college. I am sorry I cannot remember the name of the company, but I am sure if you call the school direct, they can tell you. The project I was going to do was unique but certainly not worth the expense involved.

Your best bet is to assume the College HAS copyrighted...and it makes no difference if it is a college school, baseball team, jeep club, or even your own design...a copyright is a copyright no matter who owns it-there is no difference in how the law applies. Not all schools or groups will make you pay a 'license' or 'fee' to use their logo-some just want you to get their approval/permission. BUT you never know until you ask! AND keep in mind-that if a customer asks you to make a dozen 'Oregon Duck' hats for him-and 'says' he has permission-YOU are the one that ends up getting sued by the college when they find out. Ignorance doesn't cut it in copyright lawsuits. YOU need to have WRITTEN PROOF that the client has permission-meaning-get a photocopy of HIS letter of permission. If you have to pay for a 'license to reproduce' or 'fee' -then make your customer pay for that! It's his order!

U of O is one of the worst!
it is all run by Nike. and they don't mess around. I can tell horror stories of people I know getting in big trouble on this stuff.
Any college is a copyrighted entity and can't be reproduced withou permission and probably licensing fees and a whole list of approval processes and applications and rules and so forth. Don't make the mistake...

at best you may be able to use a local high schools logo but definitely not U of O or any other college without asking for trouble and breaking the law.

Don't give up though...I have done work for a few colleges, Dartmouth College being one of them...and because I am doing it FOR THE COLLEGE (admitting department, health department, etc.) then THEY have the authority to give me the order without any fees or licensing junk...it's 'their' logo and 'their' order. So ask...it's when you are doing work for a third party (like selling to the school store) that you need to pay for licensing, send in samples for approval, etc.-because YOU are coming up with items to sell. But when the head of the athletic department comes to you and wants jackets for the school team...then THEY are giving you an order under their copyright authority.
                      Hope this makes sense!

It can depend on what you are using the logo for. I had a customer wantingthe U of O logo on thier speaker covers for thier boat and since thats not something you can just buy from the school my customer sent ane-mail asking permission to do this and I received a 1 tme permission to do this as long as they were not for resale.

I did the same thng for the Miami Dolphins one of my customers being a huge fan for 20 years wanted thelogo on his golf cart seat which was all done up Dolphins. He originally did a sticker but it didnt work well so he e-maled the dolphins and got permission for me to digitize and logo hisgolf cart as long as he wasn't going to sell it for profit.

I paid nothing for permission on either of these. Just know these were specialty items the organizations didn't already do and also each school or professional team or whatever has different rules so always check with that group before using thier logos illegally.

I too checked into doing logo's for Auburn University in Alabama...I can't remember the name of the company that handles all or most of the licenses for Colleges for this type of work but as Sharon stated it was too expensive and too much paperwork or time...I did find out one thing that may help some people that may not know this but most people already know what I am about to say...you can do the logos for yourself or to give as a gift to someone you just can't sell the item...I have also done work from other companies such as RamTool, Alligator Ice and Coo Coo Coolers that an employee wanted me to put the logo on shirts for them to give to their customers...in each case I had the employee get permission from the companies for me to do this before I did...I had one customer of a Western Wear store call me that wanted to see if I would put the Wrangler logo on some shirts for him...I told him no that I couldn't because for one thing the shirts weren't Wrangler Shirts and I didn't have the license from Wrangler to do this...

Thank you - that is very nice of you! However, we did already buy one from an embroidery site.

                              JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS:
There were specific limitations involved regarding the use of the logo. You absolutely cannot change colors AND the logo MUST be name dropped with the city of the local chapter. You must also have written permission from that chapter. Logos left as the rotary logo alone can only be purchased through them directly. Hope that clears up a lot of the questions out there!
