  • Running OS 7 and DS 7 on Vista

    Hi,

I installed DSPro+ 7 and the version 7 OS on my windows Vista machine. When I go to load the design to the Amaya XT, I get the loading design pop up window with the clock like progress icon, but it just runs and runs and nothing happens.

Is there something in Vista that needs to be set to communicate to the machine, or some other reason I can not get connected to the machines. I use the same setup on another PC but that has Windows XP, figured I should try getting it working on my new laptop for when the day comes that my super old one I use now dies.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steve,

Did you try to do a configuration to see if they can acually communicate with each other?

    Force download checked?

      Hey Rod,

Is force Download an Amaya OS setting or Vista setting? Is there config. to test just the communication?

      Thanks,
      Steve

        Steve,
Force download is on the AOS . So is the Configuration.

Start with your Machine and AOS off. Open AOS but do not turn on the machine at this time.

When you get the grey AOS screen, in the upper toolbar, click on "Tools", "Options", "Ethernet" and make sure "Force download" is checked. Apply/OK yourself out of this screen.

Now back to the upper toolbar and select "Configuration". I am assuming that we are discussing a 1 machine hookup and AOS is not being used in what they call the "Advanced" mode. You cannot perform a configuration in the advanced mode in Ver7.

Follow the steps as they come up on the screen exactly. It is pretty clear and easy to follow the instructions and you should have no problem.

If after first starting the Configuration process and after it instructs you to turn on your machine, the screen shows in the display box that there is 0 machines recognized then the first thing to look at is the cable connection from the computer to the machine. Try a different port for the dongle/security key....let me know how this goes for you.

If this is a single machine hookup, you should be running the yellow crossover cable from the cable to the machine. If you are running throught a hub or switch you should be using ethernet cables from the computer to the hub and from the hub to the computer. It is my understanding that there are "smart switchs" that will recognize a crossover cable and convert them. But, for the most part, stick wiht the simplest method, just one less thing to go wrong.

          Steve,

One more thing, The AOS will not open up if the computer is a 64 bit system. DS will. You must, at present, be using a 32 bit system to get AOS to open up. Can you get DS to open?

            Hey Rod,

Yeah I can get DS 7 to open.
I just got DS and OS 9. So figure I will try to install that and try to connect to the machines after that.

I have three Amaya XT's that I will need to connect.

Hum, trying to install the New DS / OS 9 and get a pop up that I need a key could not be found. I click OK and then the install just stops and closes. So I will play around and see if I can figure out that one now.

              Steve,

If you didn't receive the key code with your disk, you will need to call MelcoMart and have them give it to you over the phone or email it to you. I didn't the code with mine either. They were very quick to get me the code.

                Ok,

I have installed DS and OS v9.
I had to de-select the new director app. to get past the missing key pop up.

DS 7 and DS 9 work both on my Vista machine.
OS 7 - loads but I get "loading CSA and RSA" and the clock icon runs but nothing happens.
OS 9 - The app loads and right when it loads I get an error that the OS has stopped working and must close.

                I have three Amaya XT's.

I do have an XP laptop with DS/OS v 7 that works great. So trying to get my new laptop all setup so I can move to this new laptop one of these days.

                Thanks,
                Steve

64 bit or 32 bit system?

OS will not open on a 64 bit system. Design Shop will.

                    Hey Rod,

It's 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

                      Steve,
Were you able to do a "Configuration" with this computer hooked up to the machines in OS? and what were the results? Did it recognize all three machines?

You cannot have both 7 and 9 open at the same time, one or the other but not both.

                        Hi, Rod,

In OS7 I did select the "Force Download", but did not follow the other "Configuration" steps because you said something about that being for just one machine setups.

I did still have the same results with Force Download Selected. It tries to load CSA / RSA but never does in OS7.

I tried the "Advanced Mode" and that is interesting. It opens a left column and I can see two of my Amaya machines serial numbers with a red box over the macine icons. I have three machines. It also pops up the loading CSA / RSA window. As it sits there sometime the serial number of machine #3 comes up and one of the others goes away. The "loading CSA / RSA" message just runs and runs the clock icon, but never ends in OS7 on Vista.

Yeah, I close Version 7 and then try version 9.

OS9 On Vista basically just starts to open the application and before it fully loads the app I get an error that the application has stopped working and then it closes. I re-installed OS9 off the CD again, and same results.

                        Vista Status:

OS7 - will not actually connect to the machines.
OS9 - application dies when it tries to startup.

                        XP Status:

OS7 - Works great, no issues. Uses another PC I have.
OS9 - Have not installed on my XP machine.

                        Thanks,
                        Steve

                          Steve,

This is a process of elimination. The configuration process is for all machines hooked to the system. You had not previously said how many machines we were dealing with. So far you have not done a proper configuration sequence. Remember, in Ver7, you cannot do a "Configuration" in the "Advanced Mode". You must disable the Advanced mode by going into Settings, Preferences and unchecking the Advanced Mode, then X out of the OS program and reopen it. After the Configuration has been completed , you will need to go back in and reverse this process to re-enable the Advance Mode option.

I would try this...unplug the ethernet cables out of 2 of your machines. Go thru the configuation process with each machine independently. Try it with Ver 7 first and then see if you can open that machine in Ver9. One of the machines is not being recognized, by your description, by the computer. This may be because of a bad ethernet cable or connection or a bad port in your ethernet hub/switch. Swap cables around on 1 machine at a time.....swap ports on the hub/switch. Set the serial numbers for the machines during the configuration process. Ver 9 does this just a little differently but the process is the same.

In short, deal with 1 machine at a time. If you have the, or a crossover cable(yellow), then use that and eliminate the hub/switch out of the loop. If all you have is the ethernet cables, then keep the hub/switch in the loop but try different ports.

If you can get each machine to respond and be recognized during the configuration process, you have now been able to verify that they can work. Now, with all machines hooked up....get a grey screen by opening OS and then turn on the machines 1 at a time. If you have all of these machines on a power strip, don't let all of the machines try to load up at the same time during this process of elimination testing...

Ther are more things to check, but try these first....

                            Hi, Rod,

Thanks. I think I just need to buy XP and overwrite Windows Vista on this new PC.

I know my ethernet cables and hub work fine. I am running all three machines just fine on OS 7 on my XP machine.

When I hook up my Vista machine to the same machines, same hub, same cables, I get can't connected. The only difference is the PC has Vista. If I go into the "Configuration Wizard" in Amaya OS 7 It says it sees all (3) machines. I then press the target button to get a beep on my PC and display the machine name in the list, but I get no beep and no machine in the list box. I have tried just connecting one machine, two, and three, same deal.

If I do the same Configuration Wizard on my XP machine running the same OS 7 it works just fine.

OS 9 on Vista does not appear to be a machine issue. The application itself just dies as soon as it tries to start on the Vista laptop. It does not even open the OS window all the way before it dies and closes.

I think my best bet is to get rid of Windows Vista on this new PC since I know everything works fine on XP.

                            thanks for all your help.

Steve, you better check with someone about overwriting Vista with XP, because I don't think you can do that! Better safe than sorry.
