  • Version 9 & Version 7 - Co-exist?

    Hey All:

I am installing 9 on a new computer now that it's official and not in testing anymore and I swear there was a way to install both 9 and 7 on the same computer.

I changed the install path on 9 but noticed that 7 would no longer start - in fact, the designshop.exe from 7 was gone.

Also checked in start/remove programs and it listed only the last version.

I swear Jeff said they could co-exist and that I even had it installed that way at one point, but now it's not working.

I would imagine many users might want to buy 9, get comfortable with it but still leave 7 on till they feel like they have it down. Does 9 now pull 7 off?

Could I reinstall 7 to fix this? Anyone have it set up this way?

    John,

I am running both the 7.00.xxx and Version 9 on the same computer and have no problems. But....

You cannot have both open at the same time, one or the other, but not both, on the same computer

That is the way mine is reacting , anyway.

Does this "upgrade" to Version 9 also upgrade the OS as well?

        Rod:

Thanks for the feedback. Assuming you put them in seperate installation paths / folders right? Maybe I'll try again today.

GF - yes there is an OS upgrade as well.

          John,

The only thing we did that may make a difference is when it is time to say yes or no to "Do you want the DS icon to show on your desktop", .....I said yes and installed separate icons for 7.00.xxx and V9. Opens each one independently just fine....

One thing the folks will like, on the Amaya OS V9, is the ability to "tilt" or rotate slightly, a design in the hoop. This works using the Lazer and Arrow keys on the machine keypad. This would really come in handy if you hooped a shirt with a pocket slighty off or were working with plaid material and a line of lettering is going to go down crooked. neat feature. Haven't tried it on caps yet but should be able to do the same thing ....

For those of you that have purchased the new V9 upgrade would you be willing to share what your purchase price was. I have V7 Pro+ and would like a ballpark figure before I contact my sales rep. Thanks!

From the website, www.melcomart.com, it is listed @ $1095 for the upper levels (your pro+), with a current discount to $995, and the additional $50 "coupon" discount, puts it at the final discounted price of $945.

              Check it out for yourself,

Is that what you paid and if so, did you try to bargain it down? I was told by a person in a position to know, that Melco could sell for a lot less than what they do on upgrades because it is an in-house product. Just trying to find out if anyone has tried and been successful. I know the initial reaction of the sales reps is almost one of indignation. Don't want to insult anyone just trying to save a few dollars. As someone on the list said, who else are they going to sell the upgrades to? Would think this would be a area Melco could help their clients a little more than what they do. Just my thoughts.

Is there an additional charge for the OS upgrade
or are they packaging it together with the purchase of DS Version9?

I suppose where they could help would be with responsive phone and email support, and that takes money. I have always had one foot in a specialized market and software and support costs money. I am willing to give them their just desserts, in hopes of a return on it later, whether that is in my sales or in their service. A thousand dollars for a major upgrade in the last 2-1/2 years of my ownership in this specialty market is not too unreasonable, I feel. I may balk at paying $250 for Quickbooks every year when the upgrades don't seem that major and wait a few years in between (but QB is not my money maker), but $1000 every three years is reasonable to me for the nature of the software and our small business market.
Signed up, but not shipped out yet.

                      Debbie,

The OS/DS is one package for the V9 Upgrade. For those folks that do not have or use DS, I don't know how Melco handles or charges for that when OS is separated and sold separately.....

I was able to get it running after I unistalled both, deleted the folders and reinstalled. I did get an error during the install of 9 (which I installed second) about moving or deleting a file but it finished and both work fine.

I should also mention (cough cough) that this is running on Windows 7. I know I was sucessfully able to do it under xp but had never tried under vista or now it's successor Windows 7. For the record, it runs just fine under windows 7 which is good news for Melco.

Anyway, it did work, and I installed each in a seperate folder.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone.

I purchased the new V9 upgrade but have not installed it yet. I still have a parallel port dongle so will the new Version work with the old type dongle? Also, like some of you have said, I would like to install it separate from V7 until I get used to 9 but haven't tried yet. If I understand correctly, when you install the new Version and attach the dongle when requested, the software writes the new information to the dongle. If that assumption is true, how can you have both versions coexist on the same computer? I did not get a new dongle with my upgrade because it was an upgrade. Should I have or would I have needed to buy a completely new program to get a new dongle?
I would love to have a USB dongle and have tried the parellel port to USB converters but haven't gotten them to work. Any advice out there in Amaya Land?

V7 is in a folder called Melco Embroidery Systems and V9 is in a folder called Melco. They can work on the same computer but you can't have them open at the same time. You will have issues if you try to have both open at the same time. Your current dongles should work with the upgraded version.
