How to combine column elements?

I am digitizing a logo for a military organization. It is a symetrical design and I am using the duplicate and mirror tools to make each side look alike.

It is uber cool to be able to combine the fills as one object, but I don't see a way to ask the software to combine column objects. Is there a way?

Not at this time. Columns can't be easily combined. Although, if you have the time, you could convert your colums over to fill stitches, then combine them, then convert back over to columns. Although you'll find you may not like the stitch directions. You will find it's faster to butt your colums together and if borders are required, simply create them yourself.
