If you want the letters underneath to be voids under the top letters, then you are going to have to manually digitize this. I don't believe that with DS you can put one letter on top of another and create voids on the bottom letter. I personally don't know of any digitizing software that will do that, but there may be some out there. It shouldn't be too hard to digitize it though.

Use the font to generae the letters, then convert the lettering to vector. This will allow you to edit each letter and add/remove pieces of it. Remember you will probably then need to add underlay because it will no longer be an embroidery font. I've had to do this numerous time and it works out well.

you want to contert to wireframe, not vector, and use the split element feature. This was discussed in a question, "several editing questions" a few topics down.

I've got a button on my toolbar in design shop pro 6, one of them I can 'weld' or combine 2 elements together by selecting them and clicking that button, the other one will take whatever item is on TOP and remove the layer beneath it where it is hidden.
I'm pretty sure I've used this on lettering without
converting the font...or someone will jump in here and correct me. But it works real slick-no need to manually cut the underlaying art or lettering.

Do the other versions have this "weld" button that will remove the stitching under an item? I've looked for this...i think I have DSPro+ 7.00.046.

Theres' two boxes on the toolbar, I don't have it turned on now so I can't remember if it's a blue and red circle or blue box and red circle...something like that.
One of them is to 'weld' (join) multiple pieces of an element together-I use this a LOT in cleaning up dakota designs...the other one is to remove stitching that is 'under' something else. And I'm pretty sure I used it for overlapping lettering more than once. Don't think I had to convert the lettering to wireform, but even if you have to, it is still a time saver compared to doing it manually.

Its called combine or subtract elements. It only works with certain types of stitches. Make a square using fill stitches or complex column. Then make another overlapping a corner of the first one. Then select both elements in the design tree. You will see a red and blue dot with a + or - go from grayed out to where you can select them. You can click the subtract element one and the area in the first square where the 2nd overlaps it will take out the stitches. You have to play with it to see whan and where it will allow you to use this function.

First of all, let me apologize for giving the wrong information. There is, indeed, a Subtract Element icon that works really well. I have been playing with it this morning - just wish I had known or, maybe remembered is a better word, about this before because I have done this manually. But the Subtract Element is just so easy to use.

I created a circle - that's my golf ball. Then I created the word Golf in Garamond font and for the baseline I used Bridged. I made the sides narrow and the center fat - kind of giving the impression of a "radial out" so it looks like it is on a curve. I centered the text on the golf ball, then selected both and used the subtract element icon to get rid of the circle under the text. Then I deleted the text. This left me with my gold ball with Golf written in negative on it. Pretty cool!

After you select the elements in the project tree, "RIGHT CLICK" on the subtract element icon.

This will bring up a separate screen that will allow you to input whatever "over lap" you desire when the stitches are removed...then left click on the icon and the computor does it's magic....did not see this mentioned yet....

It is the very last icon on the Object toolbar. It will not be functional until you choose two overlapping objects.
