        Scott,

As a starting point and with still no information to go on except they "won't pick up the bobbin", are you absolutely sure that they are "oriented" properly. that is, securely pushed all the way up into the needlebar and position with the "grove" on the "front" side of the needle facing either straight forward or slightly ( 5 to 10 degrees ) to the right?

I use a magnifying glass to insure that my needles are exact....

I thoght that might be it but no luck. The number three neddle did work fine then I did some hats and now it will not work right. This also happened with the 9 neddle. I not trying to be vague just not sure how to ask the right question. I am new to this and do this part time. I bought this used from someone and it has not been used much. Just a bit lost.

              Scott,

Have you done a "Complete" lubrication of the machine? Are thes needlebars oiled, has the reciprocator had any oil added in the key hole slot on top of the bar? Has the pinch and/or threadfeed rollers been greased lately?

Have you taken out the suspect needles and spun them with your to see if they may be bent or damaged?

If you were doing caps and they worked before, but not now, then they may be bent...good thing to check.

Definitly take the time to "completely lubricate the machine....

What software are you running...is it Version 7 or Version 9 and at what level...that is...7.00.??? or 9.00.???

Under " Settings "," Timers ", you can step thru each of the maintenence areas to see what and how to lubricate the moving parts.

                thanks rod
do you think it is lack of lube? i talked with tech support last week they told me to lube the top and bottom of shaft that drives the needle down, the rottery hook, we cleaned all the pinch wheels then lubed them. when the neddle goes down it does not seem to pick up the bobbin. after cleaning and lubing the other night i ran a test with 16 "s" fonts one for each color. it would not run the 3,5,9,and 12 s. i have ver 9.00.074. i thank you for your help i sure need it.

                  Hi Scott,
This is Sharon...Rod is on the phone trying to help someone. Check those
needles. If you have a magnifying glass, look at the top of the needle and
be sure the "groove" is straight forward---not the least bit to the left.
You may even rotate it to the right 5-10 degrees (which is very little). I
will have you start there. I am sure Rod will have you check other things
                  if this doesn't help.

                      Scott,

I think at this point you need to run the Amtrim Test Design. This is just for testing the trimmers which affects the bobbin pickup to some degree.

Amtrim is found by going into C drive, Program Files, Melco, Amaya, Test Designs, Amtrim.

Use 3 layers of " cut-a-way" backing tightly in an 18cm hoop, (do not use tear-a-way backing for this test), and drop your presser foot all the way down and up 1 click. Check all of your machine settings. Use the "auto activ-feed. In Tools, Settings, Threadfeed, check to see that the auto-lower limit is at 1 and run/fill speed is at 100...these are the defaults.

Run the machine to start at 1100 spm but not above 1200 spm.

In the Color Sequencing, select colors 1,2,3,4,5,6 and so on to 16 and the colors will wrap themselves from there.

Run this design and document the failures, if any on each needle and what that failure is, ie...miss trim, not picking up the bobbin, etc.

One of the causes for the needle not picking up
the bobbin is that the bobbin was not picked up by the selector and the knife then cut it off at the top of the bobbin case, leaving a very short tail on the bobbin thread, which in turn, the rotary hook was not capable of picking up and tieing into....whewww...ran out of breath on that one....

The next time you get a "no bobbin pickup" on one of those needles or any needle, for that matter, pull out the bobbin case and see if the bobbin thread is cut off very close to the case...this is a very good indicator that the selector may need to be adjusted...

                              Scott,

We are assuming that you are using polyester thread..if so what brand? (the failing needles).

Here is something else to try/do. Go into Tools, Settings and in the Machine tab, change the "Inching stitch count" to 6..it is normally set at 3. This will give the machine extra time to pick up the bobbin thread and tie it together.

Also, on the same display page, what is the "Tail length" set to? Select "Medium tail" length and then make sure the "Trim type" is set to "Normal". You might even try this with the tail length set to "Long".

It sounds as if you need to check the "hook timing" to see if it is correct. In the "Parts and Tech Manual" CD the hook timing is described pretty well...checking it is one thing, setting it or adjusting the hook timing is another....
