Cat6 550Mhz Snagless Patch Cable

I need to purchase longer cables and need to know if a Cat6 550Mhz Snagless Patch Cable will work. The cables I have now say Cat5e on them. Will I have to use the Cat5e or will Cat6 be OK?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cat6 cables will be fine. As the category number goes up it indicates that the cable is capable of carrying information at higher rates. Your Amaya machine should work with any cable rated Category 3 or above.

Since you said "cables" not "cable" I'm take it that your machine is plugged into an ethernet switch. If you are connecting directly from the computer to the machine without a hub you will need to get a crossover cable with a Cat3 or higher rating.

FYI......

Melco uses/supplies a "cross-over" cable(yellow in color), for a one computer to one machine direct hookup.

For multiple machines or anytime a hub/switch, router, etc, is used, then standard ethernet cables will be substituted for the "cross-over" cable supplied with the single machine purchase.

I recently confirmed this with Melco tech support again. They said , yes, a standard ethernet cable for a one computer, one machine hookup will/may work, maybe, for a time, but then it will get glitchy or quirky after a while. Lots of iffy, maybes there!!....

Cross-over cables are wired differently than standard ethernet cables....

I have a router to which I just recently added the Amaya and it's computer. It is working but the cables are really too short for permanent use. I don't have the printer talking to both computers yet but hopefully that will happen soon.

I found the right length on the Dell website but it is Cat6 so I thought I better check with someone that knows about all that first. I will go ahead with the Cat6.

Will a standard ethernet cable plug into the same slot as a cross over cable? When I look at the pictures the connectors don't look the same. The difference in price is an eye opener too. Those ethernet cables are pricey.

The difference between CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6 is the speed data can travel though the copper. CAT5 is pretty old now-a-days and can travel 100 Mbps. CAT5e and CAT6 can travel at 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps.) Maybe a tech can chime in how fast the network card is in the Amayas. If the card is 100mbps, you can buy any of the cables. If the network card is 1gpbs, I would suggest CAT6.
Yes, the connectors are identical, the difference between a regular ethernet cable and a cross-over is a cross-over, the wires are reversed inside the cable. If you use a hub/switch, you can use regular ethernet. Make sure you buy a cable that is a couple feet longer than what you need (you can always let the slack sit behind your computer or machine) but you can't stretch it. Gigabit is becoming standard slowly on corporate networks now.
Unrelated, but CAT7 is just coming out which is 10gpbs but I don't think any network cards are fast enough to handle it now...give it time.
One other thing, you can wait for shipping times, I would buy it on newegg.com or eBay. It will be much less money than a retail store.

Not being a computer geek, this is how the 'crossover' cable was explained to me compared to the 'ethernet' cable...I will simplify it even more.
Take a penny, nickle, dime, and quarter and line them up in front of you, vertically...now do the same about 6" to the right, but reverse the order...quarter, dime, nickle, penny...and take a ruler or piece of paper-lay it straight across the bottom of each row. Now you see your penny is 'connected' to the quarter...if this was wiring, NOT what you want. A 'crossover' cable flips the wiring inside...so the penny connects to the pennny, nickle to nickly, etc. A straight 'ethernet' cable does not do this.
Now if you have a computer and an amaya, turn both so the backs are facing you, rotate one to the left, one to the right...and imagine the wiring going from one to the other...you have just 'reversed' the wiring hookup...you need the crossover cable so the correct wires are talking to each other! No, no one will actually do it with the computer and an amaya, but if you can visualize it, it makes sense. All the computer jargon made my head ache-this way it made sense.

50 feet is probably way too long since most people keep the computer and machines in the same room. In most cases, a 10-20 foot cable would work.
