What causes the thread to be sling shot back on a trim?
where it ends up being too short?
I have one machine that does this regularly

I don't have time to answer, but try searching "thread needle trim." These words should give you plenty of prior posts to look at.

This is actually the knife adjustment when the thread is cutting both sides of the loop pulled around the hook.
