  • winter jackets help needed

I am trying to sew simple lettering (Copper DAk) on a Port Authority jacket that has a poler teck fleece lining. I keep getting false thread breaks. I am using 2oz cutaway backing, 80/12 sharp needle and have tried adjusting my actifeed from 15 - 8. Once I get to 8 I start getting thread breaks. At nine and above I get false thread breaks. I have tried changing needles and adjusting bobbin tension. Nothing working.

Need some sewing advice from you cold weather embroiders.

I've done a few of the Port Jackets and never had a problem. IF I"m 'inside' the liner-using the Porthole zipper...then I use a 3 oz. cut away (and just leave it when done-the extra insulation is appreciated-don't cut it off), set the presser foot to touching, and run actifeed as AUTO. I don't think I have used 'manual' actifeed since we got the upgrade it came with...and never screwed up a jacket yet...those port'hole' pockets make it so easy. The only time we sew 'through' the lining is for right chest logos...

Don and I embroidered 12 Port Authority Challenger 1754R Jackets for our Volunteer Fire Dept. in December. The port hole was nice to have. The jacket back and left chest were not too bad but the right chest was the hardest. We were able to use the port hole for all three sew outs and they look great. We love the Port Authority merchandise and we purchase a lot of it for repeat business. We use BlankShirts.com and we get a great price and the quality of their merchansie is very good. We have purchased many canvas bags, aprons, baby bibs etc. and have never had a problem with anything we have bought from them. Have a great day and until next time...Jenny

Jenny if you have a tax # then you might be better off going directly to Sanmar to get your items as that is who BlankShirts gets their items from...

        Good Luck!

          Cindy,

Your actifeed number is causing your thread breaks. I do these jackets all the time. If you are using the port pocket and not sewing the lining set your actifeed to auto and a lower limit of 1. If you are sewing the lining as well set the lower limit to 3. The jacket may feel thick but the fleece compresses. In either case make sure your presser foot is not too high.

When getting an account from Sanmar, ask for an 'account executive' to get assigned to you...and then ask about 'case pricing' on ALL quantities and free freight. You should have no problem getting it-they want your business. Case pricing means if you order 1 jacket or 36, you get the case discount. Free freight I think is for orders over $150 unless they lowered it-and if you are 'close' to the free freight order, throw in a couple tote bags-you can always sell a tote bag! and make up the difference-an $8 tote can save you $38 in freight!
And if you order 'samples'-DON'T say they are samples-they get you samples for half price (same as your case price) BUT they put a big brass grommet in it to hold the color swatch samples! Order them separately and just pin them to the inside lable-then order the jacket or whatever in YOUR size-so you can use it next year!

Thanks for all the information on Sanmar. I just went to the site a few minutes ago and gave all the information they asked for. I will have to wait a day or two before I can get prices I guess. Some prices were listed but some I wanted to compare were not listed. Thanks again and have a great day...Jenny
