  • HELP! Broken Screw on WACF Extended

Good morning all! I got to start my morning by finding that one of the large head silver screws that hold my cap driver on the XT has someone snapped off. Oddly enough I ran it all day yesterday and never noticed that this had happened.
Here's the tricky part, I have another one, but can't figure out how to get it to fit between the bar and the top of the driver. Has anyone had to replace one of these?
Can I still run? I have to get these hats done and I really do not get the same results with my non-XT.

Thank you in advance for your time.

    Hi LuAnn,

I am going to assume that we are talking about an XT capdriver......Big Reds cap drivers are put together a little differently......

Do not run the cap driver without the thumb screws being in place. To replace the large thumb screw will require removing 3 screws in the frame on the top side of the cap driver and loosening the forth so that the top part of the frame can be swiveled to the side slightly. The screw can then be easily replaced.

I like the large thumb screw idea but do not care for the material that they are made out of. It does not seem to hold up well and will definitly fail if they are over tightened. On the other hand, if they are allowed to come loose, the vibration will quickly cause fatigue and they will/may fracture.

Take a close look at how the top part of the cap driver frame is assembled, 4 allen head screws are all that is involved.....remove 3, loosen the 4th, swivel the top plate over and replace the screw and you are back in business...

I replace my large thumb screws with regular allen ones when they break and I haven't had any of the allen ones break. Not bug on the thumb screws either.

For those of you that have wondered what the two short shanked allen head wrenches supplied were used for...

Aaron has brought up that topic when he mentions using regular allen head screws to replace the large thumb screws. One of the short shanked allen wrenches allowed the cap driver attachment screws to be reached and tightened between the shaft and the top plate of the cap driver. This was before the useage of the large headed thumb screws but they still supply the allen wrenches ......go figure......

          Hi Rod!

Thank you so much for the help. I got your response when I got back here after unfortunately having to attend a funeral service this morning.

I was able to get things apart and back together. Thank again!
