  • Vista 64 Bit & Network Cards - Ethernet Did Not Start

New computer - installed v 7.00.114/.115 and can't get the AOS to see the network adaptors.

On AOS startup, I get an error "ethernet communications did not start correctly, restart computer".

This is in a dual NIC setup.

Anyone have thoughts? I am fresh out of ideas for tonite and need to get this set up and running in the next day or so. Our main computer is on it's last legs and is the only remaining computer I own running XP.

Oh, and adding one more thing - I pulled the second nic card out and still got the same error message.

Interesting - just talked to tech support at melco a moment ago and they said that their guess was that my new computer from HP had 64 bit Windows Vista installed - and that AOS will not work under 64 bit.

I'll confirm later tonite but that does make sense, as I had noticed there were two "program files" folders on the c drive. One "program files" and one "program files (x86)". Googling that - it appears that is indeed related to 64 bit windows installs.

Crud. So, I need to do a clean install of X86 windows.

Just something to look out for if you are buying a new computer. Make sure it's not running Windows Vista 64 bit edition. Mark at Melco said he's seeing it installed as default more and more...

John - I think the tech support guy at Melco is right about this, but it strikes a chord in me.

Vista has been out for a few years now - Service Pack 1 has been released and yet there are still loads of applications that are not Vista compatible.

This is not a dig on Melco as I see it in some of the financial software I use during the day. Many computer manufacturers have stopped offering Windows XP and only give you different flavors of Vista to choose from. What will it take for companies to become Vista -compatible? It's only a matter of time before Microsoft stops supporting XP, just as they stopped on Windows ME a while back.

It's funny I think the same thing, what kills me is the new commercials from microsoft where the show people the new windows "Mojave" and when they like it and think it's cool they tell them that it's really windows Vista! Vista looking and being "Cool" has never been an issue, I mean it's a memory and resource hog but the big problem is that it isn't supported by a huge number of existing software or new software and hardware, A lot of us have a ton of money tied up in software
and the thought of having to rebuy everything to move to what has been a very buggy experience is what lies at the heart of the issue,
Vista is great to see and use as long as you never have to use a program that the computer didn't come with,

Heh - I hear you. Honestly though, my entire network is running vista now and it runs great since service pack 1. No real issues.

As an IT Guy by trade, this is the first pc I have run across with Vista 64 bit preinstalled though - which in concept is great since it runs faster, but in reality, doesn't support legacy apps very well.

              Tom:

I hear you - to be clear - DS and AOS runs fine on Vista 32 bit but it seems Microsoft is pushing 64 bit more and more.

Oh, and Windows 7 (the sucessor to Vista) is about to debut in either alpha or beta stage at the Professional Developers Conference a few weeks out - and I hear it's pretty far along in the dev lifecycle. So.......

                John,
Is there a reason why you took me off the email list?
I'm not getting emails from amayausers when people post

                  Steve:

I did not take you off the list. I don't do that nor does Aaron unless someone asks to be removed.

My suspicion is that your ISP has blacklisted the server that the amayausers mail has come from. John Cathers reported having the same issue a day or two ago. Don't know if he got it resolved.

You should be able to check with your ISP (who is that out of curiosity) and ask them to whitelist email from freelists.org

Either that or it's being tagged as spam...

turing.freelists.org looks like the mail server that things get sent from.

also make sure [email protected] is whitelisted too.

I'd be curious what your ISP says... comcast was pretty responsive to me in the past when they had mistakenly RBL / blacklisted a server I used.

Then they are either blocking this domain or the [email protected] address...

Not sure what to tell you on this - I don't know what I can do to get them to unblock it. Are you sure it's not hitting the spam folder?

Steve... I have a hotmail account (with an @msn.com address) from the old days. I just subscribed it and I confirmed I am getting email from the boards side of the site.

                            Odd.....

John did you find out if it is Vista 64 on your computer? Does it have 4gigs of ram? If it does than it is Vista 64. Also you can Right click on Control Panel and then Properties and it will tell you.
