  • Acti-Feed not working

I have tried re-install, clean and lube all the way to 10 million (twice), re-boot, I don't know what's next. I have an Amaya big red with the cylyndrical arm. I think that's an XT but it's red and white...I also have another Amaya big red with the flat style.

The acti-feed seems to be pushing way tooo muchb thread. I run at 1200 and no thread breaks, but constant false bobbin breaks. I slow it down at all and the thread snaps constantly. I try to auto feed and it always drops to 1 and the thread feed is erratic. I do standard and it does the same thing.

Pleas help if you have any ideas.

    Erik,
Make sure you can pass a piece of thread between your rotary hook support and the bobbin basket easily.
The hook support is that silver arm that is attached to the left, front side of the sewing/bobbin arm. It wraps around to the front side of the bobbin case area.

I can pas a piece of thread behind the hook support. The "bobbin basket" seems to have a little play in it. Is that correct? Thanks for taking the time to help me!

        Yes Erik,
The bobbin basket is supposed to rock side to side just a little bit.

Have you changed out the entire bobbin case and bobbin with a different one?

Your false thread breaks are probably caused by too much thread being delivered by the acti-feed system. Why this is could be several different reasons. Some to consider are:
        Bobbin too tight
        Hook support out of adjustment
Thread feed roller surface worn or slippery
Thread feed pinch roller not lubricated sufficiently
Thread break detection system not functioning correctly
        Take up lever action
Thread path not smooth or threaded correctly
        backing too thin
needle is tearing hole in fabric as it sews (bad needle, columns too narrow, or density to high)
        etc..

Change your needle, swap bobbin case & bobbin with other machine, use three layers of cutaway for practice sewout, and sew 1" Block letter I's with edge walk underlay. This will be a simple design that will eliminate your design as a potential problem. The three layers of cutaway act like one layer of fabric and two layers of stabilizer.
See what you get and let us know.
        Good Luck,

OK, Ed. I tried almost all of the above and what we discussed on the phone. I also talked to Melco and they are sending me a new thread feed motor and drive gear. I am going to replace both of the parts and if there is no improvement, I will call a tech.

On another note...I put a cap and design on it that requires mucho thread feed...it sewed-out better than ever at 850 spm with no bobbin or thread breaks (1. this design always gives me problems and 2. I have 10 more to do...I guess every cloud has a silver lining). I think it's just sending as much thread as it wants and to hell with what I say! Even on standard feed 1, it's coming out like crazy. I'll keep you posted.

I hope your family is well in the face of the hurricane. And yes, the offer is good...food and evacuation-lodging for service and maint.

Thanks for everything and take care,
          Erik
