  • Backing for Wool Letterman Jacket

Need some advice please! I need to sew full jacket back design on the San Mar Wool & Leather Letterman jacket. What would be the best backing to use. This will be a first for me and I really don't want to make any mistakes on a jacket that expensive.

    Thanks,
    Sue

I use a double 3 oz cutaway on these. It might be excessive but sometimes when I use a single layer or none my outlines around the letters don't turn out well and almost all my letterman logos are outlined on the lettering. You don't need to use any type of topping just backing. You can use black so it blends better if you have it.

thank you for the response. Color on backing doesn't matter because this jacket has a port around the yoke lining so backing will be inside and not show.

A second question, I had one response that said they didn't use backing, but the wool will stretch and push, how do you stabilize it? Also, I will be using the 11.75 x 14.25 rectangle frame (plastic) hooping tips are welcome.

        Thank you,

The Port Auth ones have a prot pocket so you are sewing on just the wool so you need backing. ALot of the letter jackets you sew through the wool and the thick lining and you don't always need backing but the one time you don't use it is the time something doesn't line up right or a mistake happens and its harder to take out. I very rarely use less than a double 3 oz peice of backing on my jacket backs.

As far as hooping hoop it fairly loose and then tighten after hooped and make sure you pull out any wrinkles. hoop the backing is my recommendation. YOu may be able to just slide it under but I prefer to hoop backing in whenever possible.

Many thanks again for the responses. I went to Joann's today to try and get some wool to test on and was told they only carry it during the winter. Duh, I thought it was winter. It's even been cold here in california. They said a lot of people have been asking for it but they're already out of it. Oh, well. So thanks again for the responses.

One layer of a wet laid non woven dense doft non directional cutaway should hold 30,000 stitches or more
Is is soft and it should not not affect the drapability of your jacket
