Clint, reach behind the head to the notched wheel by the presserfoot. All the way up and down 2 for hats, all the way down and up to the right place for the flat you are embroidering.
Thank you for asking.

The proper way to adjust the presser foot is to go into "Maintenance"---"Head timing"--- and click on " Bottom Center." This will put the presser foot cam in the right position so that the ratchet wheel can then move the presser foot up and down to the desired height.
For the Non-XT Amaya's, the rule of thumb was to run the presser foot all the way up and come back down 1 or 2 clicks when doing caps. This would only apply "IF" you are using the raised needle plate which is "NOT" used on the newer XT models. If you are not using the raised needle plate while doing caps, you would then treat the presser foot the same as if you were sewing flats.....
For the XT models, the rule of thumb is to run the presser foot all the way down and then go back up 1 or 2 clicks for flats or caps....
The above is for the Big Reds - Right? But if you have the new grays, for hats it is about 3 clicks up. For flats on the Gray, I set mine at the lowest or maybe one click up.
Juli,
Big Red is a "Non-XT Amaya, but, if, or, and, except whether or not you have one of the "pre-production" XT"S that were also red & white.
Just remember that the goal of the presser foot is to hold the material down to help the needle break free of the fabric and keep the fabric from lifting (flagging). All the way up, down 1 or 2, all the way down, up 1 or 2, whatever, are just guidelines. Set the presser foot according to the material you are sewing on.
If you are sewing on fleece or blankets, jackets with thick linings, towels, etc, compress the material with the presser foot, don't just let the presser foot down to touch the top of the material, compress it like squeezing it between your thumb and forefinger......
I also have one of the pre-production Big Red XT's....I still find the red and white easier to work around as I can see the thread better than on the platiumn and smoky greys of the newer XT's....
