  • Bobbin Thread

I am trying to stitch out a design on a black hat with yellow lettering. I am using the Boffo-Dak alphabet, .4 in, 4 density and black bobbin thread. It stitches out ok, but the yellow lettering is mixed with so much bobbin thread. I tried using white, but same results, just a different color (as predicted). Will changing the density help?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd check the presser foot height and the Actifeed setting.

Good tip Juli. Definitely check the presser foot first. Probably too high. If that doesn't do it, try using a single line center underlay twice. Density should be fine at that size, but if it's not working then reduce the density to 5 and see what that will do.

Also, check your thread feed. Try it at a fixed 6 or 7 and see how it sews. Them try it at 9 or 10 and see the results.

The key for hat lettering is in the tension of bobbin and thread feed, combined with letter density.

I default to white bobbins for light thread and black bobbins for dark thread on hat lettering. NEVER black and yellow! If nothing else, you can touch up the white bobbin thread with a permanent marker on your hats to match. Can't do that with black bobbin.

Here's my last tip, use an extra layer of backing. You will be amazed at how much this helps the total design appearance, even on structured hats. I use a single layer on structured hats and a double layer on non-structured. Works beautifully.

Like a lot of things, it's trial and error until you get the results you want.

I try to stay away from any of the fonts with a -dak. These are created from Dakota Collectibles fonts and they just don't run good in my opinion. I stay away from these. ALot of the -dak fonts can be found in TTF format and installed and run much better.

          Aaron,

I use Lydian and Boffo DAK fonts all the time.....never had an issue with the quality of the sew out.

What types of problems do you have?
