  • Spools unwinding at high speed!

Just noticed this on my big Red...running tote bags, 5,000 stitches all one color-and for the first time, letting it fly at 1500 spm.
Realized that it was setting up a vibration and the spools of thread are unwinding themselves! Not all, but one large spool unwound all the way to the floor-now a couple of smaller spools with the coasters underneath are doing it too!
Just curious if anyone else has seen this happen or wondered why their thread was coming off the spools.

We've noticed the thread coming off for a long time. We even changed the thread cone holder out on are reds to match the smokey one (the tilt is not as severe). We had one spool that went unoticed until the thread had gotten behind the rollers and it took hours to get it unwound from all the stuff.
There is a new thread out there- Hemingworth. It is a very strong poly. It comes in spools with covers so that you can sew with the spool in any position and not get thread everywhere. They will not have cones until November of this year. In the meantime, we have a display of their thread and are selling spools to customers when they want a special match that the 100+ Maderia colors we supply are not enough. However, when the cones come out, we will be swithching so that thread will no longer be an issue.

I picked up a sample of thye Hemmingworth thread at the Long Beach show. I haven't used it yet but it looks like a great concept. I think its out of Austrailia and like you said they will be distributing the larger spools sometime this year.

Here is something that MAY help spools unwinding with vibration. On top of the plastic disk, for the small spools) place a circle cut out of fleece. It will act as a cushion and cut down on the vibration. I just got a grommet machine and used that to make the hole. I cut a piece of puffy foam and a piece of fleece, held them together and put a grommet in the center. Worked like a charm, and I can slid it on the post just fine.

My solution was simpler....I just folded over a 2" x 1" piece of cutaway backing, slit a small hole in the center and put that on the post with the thread spool over it.

We did what Dorothy described above and it works no more thread unraveling...

            Thanks for the tips!
