  • Helicoil replacement - hoop arm hold-down screw

I've had a crossthreaded arm attaching screw since I bought my old Amaya and the inevitable has finally happened. I backed out the heli-coil insert from the hole.

Has this happened to anyone and how do I fix it?

    Thanks.

Yes, this happened to me....twice. The first time I bought the kit (Melco sells it); it's not cheap (like $175 or so). But it comes with 4 coils so the first one cost me big bucks, the second one was "free"! From what I understand (and I could be wrong) you don't "need" the tool if you know what you're doing just the coil. Good Luck.

Thanks! Does the kit happen to have the size of the helicoil on it?? I really don't want to get it from Melco if I don't need to.

      Thanks again.

No, the size is not indicated. The kit includes 8, the tool and a break off tool. The part for the coils/inserts is 32514. The PN for the tool is 32513; PN for the Tang Break Off Tool is 32515 and the instructions are PN 32547. Hope this helps a bit.

            Dorothy,
Are you talking about the metal cylinder that lines the hole on the outside hoop? The reason I ask is cuz as I tighten the hoop, mine eventually starts backing out of the hole as I tighten the screw. I just put a little Gorilla glue on the outside of the metal cylinder and slide it back into it's little hole. It holds for at least 3-4 months. Debbie

The heli-coil is a small coil (in the shape of a spring) that lines the screw holes for the hoop arms. From what I understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong), is that if you tighten the screws too tight, you can break/dislodge the heli-coil. Once it's messed up, there's no going back.

Anyway, I'm not so sure gorilla glue is a good idea....

I now hand tighten the screws and then use a screw driver to tighten further only 1/4 turn.

Ok guys and gals...here is my take on the heli-coil thing.....

My advice to anyone having problems with the heli coils in the X-carriage assembly is to "replace" the X-carriage. The new design has steel inserts pressed into the aluminum body and does not use the heli-coils. This pretty much solves the issue permanently.

I have not priced the carriage lately but I believe it is actually cheaper for the X-carriage than it is for the heli-coil tool. Bringing a tech on site to replace it for you of course would be optional......

UPDATE: Ordered a "Perma-Coil" replacement kit from the internet. Cost was $34.50 with tax and shipping. Worked like a charm. Came with the tap, (you won't need that) the replacement coils and the insertion tool. The coils are actually a little long, so you don't need the breakoff tool. The thumbscrews won't extend down that far into the coil.

I ordered my kit from Wholesale Tool online, but you can get them from Grainger, Fastenal, and several others.

Hope this helps someone in the future. Thanks for the info Dorothy, helped a lot.

                    Hi,

Can you post the link to the page and exact one you ordered? Perhaps when John gets time he can post this in the Tips and Tricks area?

Perhaps here is some useful information for folks. On machines with serial number 322... and higher there was a change made in the design of the machine. The helicoils part number 32541 are too small for the holes in the x carriage, therefore a different part is needed. 33722 is an insert that is threaded. I was told to get some locktite, apply to outside threads, and install. Allow the insert to sit overnight and you are good to go. I hope this is helpful.
