Replacement of upper and lower trap assembly

I have a Big Red I have replaced the upper and lower trap assembly Now the horizontal bar that pushes the threads between the two pieces of the trap assembly won't work. It just hits the trap assembly hard.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Are there adjustments on the trap assembly? Is there a way to make this bar approach the trap assembly slowly?
