  • Floppy Drive

    Hello,
Has anyone had trouble with their floppy drive disappearing ? Inserted the disk this morning with a companie's logo on it, the 'a:' drive shows up no where.

Try rebooting the computer and see if the light on the diskette lights up on the front of the computer as the computer boots. Usually you can hear the diskette drive spinning a couple times looking for a diskette as the computer boots.
Once the compputer boots up, open 'my computer' and see if you have an 'A' drive. If not go to the BIOS and make sure it didn't get disabled for some reason.

Hi Steve, finally did a system restore, the floppy drive came back. Then re-installed Melco Letera, once again the floppy drive is gone. Guess I go without the Melco Letera ?

From an IT Perspective, I would make sure your cable connections and power connectors to the floppy drive are good.

Also, floppy drives do die... I wouldn't rule that out. Your's could be on the way out. You can get a new one at a local computer shop for $15-20 and try plugging it in without installing it to see if it consistently comes up when starting the computer.

I would make 2 calls on Monday. One to Melco service (or email them 'service at melco.com') and see if there are any known bugs with that issue. If Melco says no, then I would call your computer mnfr. on Monday and tell them that the floppy doesn't work all the the time. Don't mention the software install to whoever makes the computer because they will ask you if you installed any software lately and dump it right back to Melco.

In the meantime, I would uninstall Letera so you have your floppy drive, save the file on your hard drive so you have it then reinstall Letera and work off the hard drive file.
