  • Constant thread breaks real & false

Big Red running version 9 software..

Tech was here again yesterday for 5 1/2 hours (we're at 16 hrs with 3 visits so far)said he guaranteed the machine was fine and although not sounding like it use to had a touch less clanking noise to it. He said I should be fine and the worst I might have is false thread breaks...nice, that means he knows it's going to be an issue... Still no bobbin detect working either and he has no clue what the issue is. The first thing I tried to run a simple stock design with word Grandma underneath a total of 9429 stitches with 7 color changes. In the past the machine ran at 1100 spm for almost everything and did fantastic. Now I'm only running at 700 spm the first run of the design had no false thread breaks but 5 real ones in the main design and took 16 mins. The 2nd run had 5 false thread breaks all in the word grandma and 14 real breaks all together taking 22 mins to sew. The stitch quality does look better but the breaks false/real are killing me and still no bobbin detect. It has a new sensor bar, I did replace the needles, tried different bobbins check and bobbin adjustments and even a new bobbin case, check the setting etc. I'm at a loss and I'm sure it would be a waste of time and money to call the tech again. ANY CLUES where I should turn at this point. Thanks Sue

MO tech here, it sounds like the hook timing is off a little. Where are you located?

Unfortunately, not knowing what the other tech has actually done or checked for....it may be trying to re-invent the wheel over and over in this case....

Was this issue something that was a gradual deterioration or did this just start all of a sudden?

Is this a Melco trained and certified tech that is doing the work for you?

We as techs have a list of "Critical Measurements" that we must go through on problem machines. If the machine does not measure up to those engineering specs, we must bring them into the required parameters.

Something that may be suspect in your case is the "Take Up Lever Cam Disk". If this disk has excessive wear, it will affect the operation of the entire machine adversly. If the cam disk is worn, the takeup levers will not travel their required distances and therefore not pull the thread tight enough around the threadbreak sensor which will affect proper thread feed and also proper thread break sensor operation.

Did the tech check for cam disk wear by checking takeup lever throw?

Many, many things to consider with this one.....

The tech is one that did the warranty work on the machine back in 2006 however I understand that he isn't with them anymore. Supposedly his decision said he went back to school and Melco didn't like his attention being divided.

The machine was running and sounded fantastic and everything looked beautiful until a thread didn't cut before it moved the needle case back to the other end. It pulled the case out of position and somehow snapped take up lever #7 the week before Christmas. Tech came spent 4 hours replacing the lever, adjusting the cutter etc he started the machine and it sounded horrible like something was hitting except for needle 7 which sounded normal to me also #12 although not normal is slightly less noisy than the rest. The second time he came out he "readjusted" everything and still insisted it sounded normal although he admitted #7 sounded and #12 were different. Got it to detect thread breaks but still couldn't get the bobbin detect working although it had worked flawlessly prior. So we replaced the sensor bar and it made no difference. The stitch quality was inconsistent and horrible this is our only machine so I've resorted to contracting out our work instead of risk a bad reputation. With this 6 hour visit he had everything apart again and told me that he readjusted everything including the hook timing and that he "tweeked" the thread take up areas etc. It seemed to have less issues in the auto feed mode which is where I usually had it but he did have a lot of the false thread breaks. After this last visit the machine sounds slightly less horrible and he commented that it wasn't so "piercing" still worse than needle 12 and needle 7 still sounds like "our machine".

Rod he was definitely inside and checked out the connecting rod, end plate and cam stared at it for quite awhile and stepping the presser foot up and down.

Left saying he'd guarantee I won't do any damage to the machine running it but I might have an issue with false breaks which he is clueless on. Like I said this is our only machine which could be the death of us if I can't start running right.

We are located in Western New York about a 1/2 hour south of Buffalo...I know but we are just getting our first snow today. Sue

If anyone knows a good tech within 7 hours of the Buffalo area I have no problem loading the machine and bring to them for help. Sue
