  • Shredding Thread

    Hello,
I am trying to sew caps and it was going fine and then....wham, I keep getting thread breaks. And it's shredding the thread.

I am sewing at 900 spm, single color, digitized font. I tried changing needles, adjusting acti feed, checked bobbin tension....

Any suggestions, I've got two more dozen to go.

    Thanks so much!

Presser Foot is raised all the way up? WHat needle did you change to. Did you try either a 80/12 or 70/10 sharp titanium if you have it?

How about backing. Are you using 2 layers of heavy tearaway backing and if you are using the WACF is it long enough to reach each side so your cap is hooped nice and solid?

I just got back from training and we sewed hats at 850 with auto on, presser foot we put it all the way down then clicked it up 2. Of course you would want to check that as it would depend on the type of hat you are doing.

      Good Luck!

Pressor foot is raised all the way down and up two clicks. I am sewing with a 75/11, so I will try to change to a different needle.

I only use one piece of heavy tearaway, but haven't had this trouble in the past. But will try two and see if that helps. The cap is hooped tight.

        Thanks for the help!

Check for proper needle orientation as well ... either dead on straight or a hair to the right. Are you using sharps or ballpoints. make sure the bobbin case is clean (do the business card trick) and the hook area is clear of debris.

Something has changed. You were doing fine, then this problem began. You choice of needle size is fine. If it is oriented properly I see no need to change it. Your backing was working fine previously so it should not be an issue. I usually run my presser foot up 4 clicks from the bottom, but again, if it was working before, why change it. So what changed??? When you get the cap on the machine is there space between the cap and the needle plate? Take your tweezers and press down on it. If it moves down more than about 1/16th of an inch it can create problems. Flagging will cause what you are describing. How long has it been since the rollers were serviced? Try sewing on a different needle bar, see if you have the same issues. One of the keys to curing this kind of issue is to not go making several different changes all at once. If you do then you have no idea what really fixed the issue and you learn nothing.

Whenever I have problems on caps, I always switch to a larger needle...usually a 12 sharp, but depending on how heavy the backing is on the cap and how dense the design is, I have switched to a 14. Punching through all of those layers can make the needle flex.
