What exactly are you looking to do with your PC besides embroidery? Any processor over 2 GHz with 2 cores or more will work fine for everyday computing. I would recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. If you upgrade to windows 7 you may have to upgrade to the latest Amaya OS. If you are already running the latest version of Amaya OS then this won't be a problem. Video cards are typically not all that important anymore unless you are playing high tech games. Just about anything will work. A motherboard with an integrated video card will also work just fine.
Keep in mind you need at least DesignShop Version 9.something to run on windows 7. Upgrading versions is expensive. Email Melco service and ask them what version is required for windows 7. I have emailed them twice with no response in the past month and asked that same question because I want a new computer as well. I just don't have the time to sit on hold waiting them to answer the phone. I'm not to happy with them right now...
I contacted a local melco sales rep about a year ago asking about upgrading. He told me it was $1,000 to upgrade design shop and Amaya OS to run on Windows 7. Since I am not using design shop as my digitizing software it was only going to cost me $500 to upgrade Amaya OS. I decided to buy a new computer with windows 7 and install XP along side of Windows 7 (dual boot). When I am embroidering I just boot the PC in windows XP. When I am using the PC for recreational use I boot it in windows 7. Its been working well for me so far. I decided to go this route because I do not want to give Melco any more money. I think they should offer the update to a windows 7 compatible version for a nominal fee and not $1000. It forces the end user to fork over a bunch of money when all we really want to do is replace our old PC and run a current operating system.
Yes, I was considering upgrading from DS to Pro+, but if they cannot even return a phonecall (and I clearly left all the info in his voicemail that I wanted to purchase the upgrade!), I don't think I will now.
