K.coll, Greg,
The answer to that question is no.
Big Red Amayas use the #9 needle as the "Home" needle position.
The XT,XTS,BRAVO use the #1 neeedle as the "Home" position.
The difference is the Big Reds use an optical laser sensor mounted at the center of the machine on the base casting behind the needlecase to control color change positions. There is another optical laser sensor attached at the upper right corner area on the backside of the needlecase. This is the "Home" sensor for the "Big Reds only." These sensors were prone to being contaminated with oil, lint, dust, etc, and were difficult to clean. Also, on the right front side of the right(black) upper arm cover, is a flang(tab) that is about 4.5in long and sticks out about 1/4in and is designed and positioned to slide back and forth through the laser sensor as the needlecase moves across the machine. This flang dictates the exact position of the needlecase "Home" position for the Big Reds. Why the engineers decided to have the #9 position, I don't know, but there must be a good reason.
The XT, XTS, Bravo series do not have the laser sensor, but instead use encoders mounted on the stepper motor that controls the color change movement positioning and the "Home position which is the #1 needle. The needlecase is calibrated so that each individual needle is set to disect the exact center of the bobbin shaft spindle and the exact center of the needleplate hole. The computer memorizes this positions. This is a huge improvement over the system that the Big Red series used and made it virtually maintenance free.
I could have just left the answer at "no", but thought you might be interested in knowing the "why."
