  • needleguard & retaining finger gaps

I have an early Big Red that didn't come with a hook retaining finger gauge. My manual (book not CD) suggests using the sharp end of 75/11 needle. Also the book has directions for checking the needle to hook gap by making a "lazy V" using a piece of thread; it doesn't even mention the needleguard gap which I learned about from the CD manual. It seems that adjusting the hook to needle gap moves the same thing as adjusting the needle to needleguard gap - is this correct? Is one more precise than the other?

These are very tight tolerances to be measuring with such inexact methods - I certainly can't see them with my inexperienced eye. Is there one tool that I can get that will help with measuring these gaps or are the any tips anyone can share?
