start machine and head remains down

I can start my machine fine, I press start and it acts like it is going to stitch and the head stays down. Nothing preceeded this. I can turn off machine and then restart and the head comes up until I press start again. Has anybody else had this problem and do you have any pointers for me? I have many jobs due out. Thankful I have 2 machines.

This does happen when a Z axis motor starts to go bad....could be a motherboard problem also...

Try all the easy things first like reloading the OS software and start a process of elimination...
