  • sticky backing

I am trying to sew on pant legs using the sticky backing and the fast frame 4.5X11. The needle gets gummed up right away, then I am getting nothing but thread brakes. I have tried everything I can think of. Can anyone help me?

Slow the machine speed down to around 900 and either float a piece of good wax paper between the sewing arm and the material or place it on top and sew through it.

Too much speed builds heat and will melt the sticky backing glue. Using wax paper will help to lubricate the needle and keep the glue from sticking.....hope this helps you

You could also try taping standard backing to the fast frame and not use the sticky backing at all. You will have to use some type of "low profile" clamps to clip on the sides of the fast frame after slipping the pant leg on it to hold the material in place. This works very well.

You do need low profile clamps or clips so they don't come in contact with the grabber or any part of the machine during a trace or while sewing, some people use the stationary binder clips and flip the spring wire flat on the garment and/or small alligator style clips found at places like Home Depot.

Using too big of a clamp and allowing it to contact the needle case and/or the grabber assembly that is connected to the needle case during atrace and/or sewing, can result in knocking the needle case loose and dropped needle bars----tech call time....so be careful using this method!!

Ahh, sticky backing. Earlier this year I discovered the new, wonderful Floriani product. It not only doesn't gum up your needle, it sews like cloth (no paper crunching sound as the needle goes through it). You can order it from RNKDistributing.com.

Also, FastFrames is selling clips to hold the fabric more securely. The clips load into a holder, then you press a "trigger" to place them. The clips are reusable. Contact FastFrames.com (I'm guessing at the URL).

One other trick that I have used is to create your own sticky back. Using either a cut away or tear fabric cut a piece to size and use your favorite adhesive, ie. KK100 which I prefer because it does not transfer any adhesive to the needles if used sparingly and apply the backing with adhesive to the fast frame and continue. A little more work at times but does work well when you need an alternative.
