  • Big logo on hat

I am trying to embroider a 17,000 stitch design on a hat. The design is 1.9" high and 2.9" wide. My problem is the hat keeps slowly sliding off the machine while sewing. It is hooped tight and I have it digitized from the inside out, and then from bottom to top. It starts slipping halfway through the embroidery. Help!

When you are hooping the cap, are you pushing the bill of the cap in too far? If so, that A"spring-loads" the cap and it will come off during stitching. Watch the video of Herb Acree hooping a cap. It is located on the left side of this screen under Tips & tricks . main menu. You will see what I am telling you.

I did not push the cap in too far; I even tried it again following the video and the cap is still pushing off.

What cap (brand and style) are you stitching on?
Is it structured, unstructured, high, medium or low profiled?

The design is not too tall, but if you are trying to sew the design too far away from the bill, that is, too high up in the sewing area, the sewing arm will rub hard and push against the crown of the cap. If the cap is not hooped tightly enough, meaning, the band must be very taut and some effort will be needed to lift and toggle over the latch, the cap can come loose.

By "pushing the cap in too far" means, "do not' bend the bill of the cap back trying to get the cap band farther in hoping the teeth will get a better grip. It will not help and it will make things worse.

Unless you have a newer XTS, you should have the cap frames for the XT machines, assuming that we are not talking about a Big Red standard Amaya.

My suggestion for you would be to use two layers of back and make them long enough to span around the cap frame so that the teeth will grip backing and cap material most of the way around the frame. some folks try to skimp on the backing length, but this does cause a lot of problems, especially with the low profile unstructured caps.

The XT frames work the same as a regular hoop kind of squeezing the material between the frame teeth and the band teeth. That is why the band needs to be quite snug. Try the two long pieces of backing and snug things up....

Let us know if this helps....
