  • Hooping leather vests

    Hey everybody- been a while.
I have been doing leather vests with the large round hoops that came with the machines. It has been 2 years now, and the rings for the hoops have become "sprung" for lack of a better descriptive. I know I can just order new rings, but I am looking for an easier way to hoop these things. As it is- it's a wrestling match between me, the hoop, and the vest. Who has tried the magnetic hoops- and will they work for very thick stuff? These vests are 2 layers of leather, an inside pocket, and a liner- all of which I have to stitch through.

The mighty hoop by hoop master hoops carhart jackets wonderfully, They have handeled quilted auto seat leather without any problem even with seams involved in the hooping.
They have held while stitching moving blankets and they are about 1/2" thick 3/8th" compressed in the hoop.

Yes they would do the trick..

I think they give you a 30 day guarantee. If you are not happy, you can send them back.

So people- if you had to choose between the mighty hoop and melco's clamping system, which is preferred? What are the pro's and con's of either? Would love to have something better than the regular hoops, or fast frames for heavier, thicker, awkward pieces.

Hey everybody- update! My first Mighty Hoop came yesterday. I (and my shoulders) are in heaven! Love it! Will order another 10" to do these leather vests (1 on machine, 1 off). And I really want a set of the smaller ones to do silk ties with- may take a while to convince mangement to buy these for me, but I will keep at it. Anyway, thanks for all the input folks. And, like you Jerome, I am sold on the mighty hoop.

You just need order the bottom flat piece, then you can get the second vest ready – just waiting for the first piece to finish so you can take the top part of and use it on the 2nd piece. Saves a lot of money and just about as fast.

People, this is awesome information to have. Please, keep talking...what types of things have you sewn that hooped much easier, good sizes to purchase, difficulty in learning to get things set up squarely on the hoopmaster,.... great idea Juli to save a little $!
