Naphtha will not make plastic brittle
Alcohol every so often is OK but extended use will degrade some plastics.

          Naphtha is the best option.

I do not know why you are getting any residue from the blk - pad dyed- backing
            Do you use a LOT?
What is the style # or where did you buy it?

We use the brand you represent 3oz and still get black on the hoops. Not as much as other brands, but still get it. A little alcohol on a rag takes it right off. Same hoops since 2005' Bill from Fine Line, Manhattan, IL

I use Grease and Wax Remover. This is found where auto paint is sold. Body shops use it to clean wax off a painted car.

Great for cleaning the machine and hoops.
                Cuts glue.

Also another good cleaner (I use to clean hook assembly and other parts of the machine) is Sprayway Electronic Contact Cleaner. I use Sprayway No. 709 but other brands will do the same.

                Quick Drying
                Leaves No Residue
                Safe on Plastics
