  • VERY dainty ladies hankerchiefs

I have some very dainty/thin, silk/linen, wedding hankerchiefs I need to put the bride and grooms name and date on. The are so thin. I'm thinking the font will be about .35 to .45 inches tall and need any advice I can get. The brides hankerchief is retailed at $400 so I'm scared to death! ANY good classic script fonts that would work well in this small font too. I did some hankerchief a few years ago and a melco tech recommended a rayon thread....I just don't remember because I had just started out...thanks in advance for any tips

I have done similar handkerchiefs. I used 60 weight thread (same size as bobbin thread) and a 65/9 needle. I was asked to put just initials on the very tip of the corner and there was a lot of very fragile lace. I had no fabric to "hoop" to speak of and didn't want to use a sticky backing so ended up sandwiching the corner of the handkerchief inbetween two layers of Solvy and hooped the Solvy. It worked well and they turned out very nice. I'm sorry but can't remember the font I used.

Just curious why you didn't use sticky backing....I was thinking of using that on a fastframe to keep it flat, any suggestions about that?

I didn't use sticky backing because of the thickness of the backing and it feeling like a heavyweight paper. I didn't want that appearance under my embroidery thread on such a sheer fabric. I wanted the handkerchief to feel "soft" when done.

Don and I had to do a very special hanky for a cousin's wife two years ago. This hanky was used at her father's funeral and also at her son's wedding. I too was scared to mess it up so I decided to just hoop it with solvy and it turned out beautiful. Good Luck...Jenny

THanks for all the helpful hints....everything went great...I used solvy as a backing and nothing on top....65/9 needle and the thin thread....slowed the speed to 700 and just took it slow....wow...I was please...
