Applique HELP HELP

I am having a major problem figuring out how to even start an applique, (the one with the fabric laid on top of material like greek lettering) I am soooo lost! Please HELP! I have read the intructions and can not figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

You are using spray tack to hold the pieces in place, correct?
