Stitch Length setting

We have the new design shop version 9. Can anyone tell me where to go to set the stitch length when using the softwares digitized alphabets? In version 7, I could change the stitch length for small micro fonts,and large. I only see a stitch length setting for underlay, which does no good if you do not require any more underlay than what the already digitized letters have in them. I checked in the "advanced" tab, and didn't see it there for top stitching. Couldn't find an answer in the help section either. Anyone??? Love learning new software, but then again, not so much! click on "Top Stitching"

you will see:

Stitch Type (select "fill" here)

Then further down there will be "Fill info" where you can change the stitch length

thanks, do I then go back and change the stitch type to satin and the stitch length setting will hold for that as well?? i guess I thought it only applied to fill type since it said fill. Appreciate the help.

I must apologize....somehow I misread your initial posting to you were looking on how to change stitch length (fill) and not column width (satin).

Let's talk about stitch lengths for a moment.
A satin stitch will have a stitch length. However that is known as the column's width.
If you were able to actually make your stitch length shorter than that of your column's width in a satin stitch, it would then be considered a fill stitch or possibly a split satin stitch.

In version 7 software, where you could type in a value for "stitch length" in the lettering properties, this was used to control the stitch length of any stitches in the lettering that are not controlled by settings in the underlay, column's width, or lock stitch properties.
I know your next question will be, "well what stitches are left"? These stitches are what I call the "get there" stitches. For example: when I need to sew a lower case "L", and I am starting from the bottom and need to end at the bottom, the software will put in a straight line to the top of the "L" so that it can do a satin stitch from the top to the bottom. The needle has to "get there" from bottom to top to start the satin stitch from top to bottom. This is the stitch that the "stitch length" properties controls.

I don't have DS version 9 in front of me right now but I believe this same adjustment is under the "advanced" settings, if memory serves me right.

thanks. Yes, it is the travel stitches I was referring to. Now it appears it can be set at the underlay level providing you add underlay of course. Appreciate the suggestions as always!
