  • Waterproofing an embroidery

    Hi everyone,
Is there a way to waterproof an embriodery? I have been asked to embroider 36 rain jackets. I explained to my client that the jacket will no longer be waterproof where the embroidery is. I was hoping that there might be a product on the market that can seal the holes that the needles make. Has anyone come across something that they can share?

I know that Amway has a product that is amazing for waterproofing. But I imagine that there are plenty of other products out there.

I have used Ultra Heat and Bond with success.
It is a rubber and has a low melt point and provided the water proofing I needed when stitching rain coats and Umbrella,
It is very thick and stands up well.
and did not make them stiff.

Juli, I checked the Amway website and they don't have any waterproofing product. Can you tell me where can I get it?

Greenwing, where do you get Ultra Heat and Bond?

          Thank you,
          Maggie

Scotch gaurd is a water proofing spray.

The ultra heat & bond is sold at fabric stores.

              I found it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-AMWAY-DRIFA...-/190452952170

It is called DriFab and it does really work.

The Ultra heat and Bond can be found at any fabric store and probably WalMart.

Juli and Greenwing, I did a web search for Ultra Heat and Bond. I found a product that is made by Therm O Web called Heat'n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-on Adhesive. Is this the product you are talking about? Here is the link:

Those who use breathable waders for fishing can attest to the adage that there are two types of waders, those that leak and those that are about to leak. For such things there is a product which is sold in fly shops and some larger sporting goods stores called Aquaseal. It is used to seal leaky waders and other such repairs. You simply apply a small amount to the leaky spot and expose to ultraviolet light source such as sunlight which sets the material. It is also packaged sometimes with a small UV pen light to use when exposure to sunlight is not feasible.

While I have not used it for waterproofing embroidery, I would see no reason it should not work. It is designed to remain flexible after drying/setting. Just thought I'd toss out another option.
