  • Summer mesh baseball caps

I have been asked to sew team numbers on the back of mesh baseball caps. One inch numbers on or stradling the back seam. What type of hooping is used, what backing. I assume topping since the fabric is mesh. I have the cap hoop that came with my "Amaya XT" but I can't seem to make it work. Any suggestions are needed and highly welcomed!!

We use a slimline clamping hoop. You can also us a fast frame. FF are less expensive. Slimline are great. Go to HoopTec or just put slimline in search and it should show up. They are useful for all kinds of things. I also stitch from the center out because they wripple. Mostly on names. I am a twins mom also.

Forget the cap hoop (esp the WACF)- I use my 4.68" hoop to hoop the back. Generally the text it curved around the hole. but with only numbers (2 at most I assume), you probably don't even need to bother to arc them- might look strange, depending on letter height. I sew them with a c/w underlay and pretty dense on mesh- say about 3 to 3.5, and use 2 pieces of 3 oz. cap backing-no topping. This works well for me.

I use my 9cm or 12cm hoop and float 2 pieces of scrap cap backing and no topping. I sew tons of mesh caps and have never used topping. Most of the ones I do are fitted so there is no hole in the back to worry about arcing. I hoop cap backs on the corner of my desk. That's the easiest way I have found so that the bill can hang down.
