  • Lost designs

Something happened with my computer and the 3 designs I was working on have disappeared. And Yes! I did save them, but they are not there. I got a message when I was in OS that DS had a problem and had to close. When I opened it, it asked me if I wanted to recover the designs and I said no because I had already saved them. Is there some way to recover them now?

And, one more question. One of the designs is still on OS. Is there a way to save if from within OS? That would help because this has to do with splitting a huge design and I did split it (that is what is lost) and sewn out one of the two designs already. I must now line up the second half and it is not easy because the left and the right are different heights so the centers are not the same!

    Juli,
From OS, go up to File and select Save AS.....name the file and save it....

Thanks Rod. I really didn't think I could save a file from OS. I did, however, finish my project. It came out perfect. Did a lot of praying and sweat a lot. That second hooping was a nightmare! I tried 6 times to get it hooped so that the design actually fit. I ended up hooping it diagonally. But it took 6 tries to get it just right. Sewed out like a dream. And the 4mm, instead of 2.5mm outline made a tremendous difference in the richness of the design. It took me 3/4 of the day, but I'm charging $100 for it.

All of these Welcome mats only last about 1 year, so there will be a lot of repeat business.

DesignShop crashing is nothing new. I have two computers and it crashes on both. Both computers are faily new with lots of memory (one has 8gb of RAM, the other has 4gb of RAM) This was brought to Melco's attention when I was a beta-tester for DS-9 but they told me it was my computer. I see this on posts here come up about once a month by different users. I'm sure it happens to many more people that are talking about it.

            Juli,

One other thing. The designs may have been inadvertantly saved to a different folder in DS or on the C: Drive on the computer....have you done a search on the harddrive for the individual files to find out where they are at.

If the files were already saved, then the message about wanting to recover a file would not have any affect on the saved files. If one of the files was loaded up in DS and some editing was being done to it and DS crashed, then when DS was reopened you would get the message about recovering. If you say yes, DS will recover the file along with some, maybe , but not often, all of the editing or digitizing changes that were made at the time of the crash. The original file would still be accessible unless "it" was specifically deleted by the operator.

My computer guru sons get after me because I always use the "Save AS" option rather than the "Save" option. But, too many times I have inadvertently had a different folder addressed, clicked save on something I was working on and Zoomie, off to hide and seek land where I now have to do a hard drive search to find where I put them....doing a "save as" forces me to look at the file name and reminds me to look at the folder location/name also.

Wnan hear the punch line?? The welcome mat is so beautiful that people won't step on it! So the Captain has ordered another one that is less rich and beautiful. This time, you can be sure, I will make sure that I can hoop it easily. I just have to make it slightly less wide. This is for a fishing boat - well more like a yacht - that cost over a million smakeroos! My husband, a commercial fisherman, was very impressed!

I am always thinking about how I can increase my business. My brother-in-law wanted me to put his name on a boat floater ring - a big one. This is in vinyl, not embroidery. So I measured the diameter, figured the radius, set the arc, and cut the vinyl in nice big Ariel Black. It looked so good that my husband found his old beatup floater and I am going to put the name of his boat on it. So, I'm thinking, there are hundred of boats around here, all of which are required to carry a floater. I think I need to make a trip to the harbor and drum up some business - hats, shirts, rhinestone designs, vinyl decals and vinyl decorations, small signs, and lettering. And there is the Charter Office where they sell shirts and hats. But I bet there is no rhinestones for the ladies. Yep, I need to go to the harbor.

Way to go Juli, that is some innovative thinking,
Find a niche and fill it.

Now if there was only a harbor around here!! lol

                  Judi,

Where do you get the welcome mats to embroider?

I have a customer who has been asking me for months and can't find a supplier.

These are all custom made for boats. There is a non-slip rubber onm the bottom and the ends have sand to weight it down. And the sizes are all custom and made out of Sunbrella or one other heavy duty marine material. Some boats have really wide gunnels and some have narrow. I have teamed up with this upholsterer that does only boats. Nobody, up to this time, has been able to order a custom made welcome mats. All the boat owners love us. I use the font that is on the back of their boats. And I get paid well.

                    I like it----

                        Juli,
The marine market can be huge. Most of my customers are boaters or fishermen as well. There is no end to the boat related goodies people will want, from wearables with the boat name, in a matching font and a design of the boat, towels, bedding(for those who overnight), tote bags and the list goes on.
Then there are the local charter captains, who need to look professional on the job and off, many of them will also buy caps to give to the charter customers as part of the charter package they offer.
Don't overlook the local marinas as well, they love promo stuff, along with garments for their employees, caps and polos are popular around here.
Pound that market hard, lots of $'s to be made there, plus the word of mouth advertising, I always give each customer a few business cards with each order, and that has paid off well too.

Thanks, Big Dog. I am going to make a flyer and am working on some samples. We have 3 harbors close by, so will make the round next week. You are exactly right - lots of business out there in the marine market. I just gotta get off my duff and go make some calls.

                            hello Juli,

Would you mind sharing a picture of a mat. It would be well appriciated or can I purchase a blank from you. I do some work for a local canvas guy and maybe I can have him make some for me - love the idea and I love embroidering on canvas.
