Going to embroidery on Nike DRI-FIT golf shirts Style 244620 from Sanmar. The fabric has tiny vertical ridges. Would you consider this fabric to be in the pique category? If so, should I use a topping? I will be using poly mesh for the backing. Appreciate your advice.

Yes it does tear away very easily. It is in addition to whatever backing I use. The backing is hooped though with the garment and the wax paper is not. It does get stitched to the garment but it comes off much easier than even a tearaway. This is something that Helen Hart from Embroidery Line taught me when I first started and it is in her book(s) too.

I would suggst, depending on the stitch count and density, a layer of mesh backed by a tearaway
Please note that ''wet laid'' tearaways & cutaways premium grade contain needle lubriacnts- so you may not need the wax paper
If it is a higher stitch count 15,000 or so use 2 pieces of the nylon mesh cross patterned
the diagonal nyl;on mesh is also made in a fusible version to arrest any movement in the hoop
