  • Metallic Thread on Velvet Stockings

I am sewing names on velvet type material (stockings) that the customer supplied so I really need to get this right. I am using the Athletic Swoosh font, Arc thread, 2" letters. I am using the Fast Frames with sticky back stabilizer and I use Design Shop Pro+V9.

I have never used metallic thread so please let me know anything and everything I may need to change to make it sew well.

I'm assuming I need to use a larger needle like an 80/12. I will also slow the machine (Amaya XT) down to about 700 or slower if suggested. What type of density changes should I make, etc?

Thank you so much for your help.

    Di,

For starters, I do not like the sticky back on the fast frames, especially with metallic thread. Lots of fraying and thread break problems...use regular backing like poly mesh, etc, and tape it to the top of your fast frame, place your garment over the top of it and use small clamps to clamp the garment, backing and fast frame--frame edge together...works great...

Slowing the machine down is also a good idea as you suggested. The needle size is ok, may not work as well on any small lettering present, but you indicated these were 2" so it shold not be a problem.

Density, lighten up a bit...say if you are using a 3 density, go to 4, etc...... this is one you have to experiment with to get it right....

A zig zag underlay would also help....

The thing that would give you the most problem, is that sticky back backing with the velvet and metallic thread combination.....

Rod and Sharon, please share what clips you use on your frames to avoid the dreaded sticky paper? TIA

        ginabea,

We use what they call "Pony"--2 inch and 4 inch spring clamps and/or the "Mini" spring clamps--3/4 inch found at Home Depots, Lowes or other simular hardware stores.

One must be "very careful" to make sure you pay close attention when adding any clamps, clips, etc, they cannot get hooked up on the thread grabber during a trace or during sewing....watch your clearances carefully....
