As techs and trainers, we use sticky spray or sticky stabilizer as seldom as possible. If I use sticky spray, it may be to only anchor the fabric to the stabilizer long enough to get an underlay down. This can be accomplished by spraying areas that are not going to be stitched such as corners of the fabric. Most often tho, we just use small clamps.

When I use spray glue or sticky stabilizers I always spray the needles with silicone during sewing to help keep the glue off.
You can remover glue buildup on needles by spraying them with electronic contact cleaner.

BUT, the needle, going up and down through the spray glue at really fast speeds, get hot. The hot needle heats up the glue and it volitizes. As a gas it gets all in the cutter area. But it is so thin that you can't see nor feel it. But it is there. I had mega, MEGA problems with trimming. Finally I called Rod and one of his first questions was did I use spray glue. Yes, but I didn't think it was the problem. He practacally yelled at me MOVE IT TO THE TOP OF THE LIST OF POSSIBLE PROBLEMS. So, meekly, I said ok. He told me to do a WD40 wash. A WHAT?? Well, to make a long story short, I no longer have any problems with trimming or rather not trimming. No shredded thread, hafl trims, broken needles, hair pulling, heart attacks. etc. Things have been running smoothly ever since the WD40 wash. Thank you Rod!

Re sticky-back stabilizer, I strongly recommend RNK (Floriani) Perfect Stick. It's like sewing through fabric and no gunk on the needles!

ha ha ha ha ...sometimes he is a pretty smart guy. He will appreciate your vote of confidence when he gets home Julie. Yes, we have seen MANY problems from sticky spray or stabilizer out in the field--that is why if I ever use it, I spray areas that won't be stitched. We seldom ever need it however. Once in a great while on a "creeping fabric".

Ditto Sharon...Don and I use the black clips that you use for office paper etc...they come in different sizes and we use the very small one and some a little bigger...the ones we use the most are the small ones...we too only use sticky backing if we have too and that doesn't happen often...we tape the backing to the frame with masking tape and then clip the fabric to the frame with the clips...it has been working for us for 3 1/2 years now and like I said before we like the fast frames so much we bought another set so we can hoop something while one is sewing and that speeds things up for us...
