  • Large monogram

    Good morning,
I have a customer that would like a large monogram in the middle of her bedspread. She would like for it to fit in my biggest hoop (16 in. square). Has anyone done this before? What suggestions do you have for font, size, settings, etc. I'm not sure most fonts will do these large letters well. Should I keep it a satin stitch or make it fill?

    Thanks for your help...

satin stitch shouldn't be used any wider than 3/8" or so-or one snag and the whole column will pull out. If the monogram is that big, I would set it up as 'art', not a font-and then play with different fill patterns until something looks good. Even large letters on hats-I get better results than trying to use satin stitch.
I would take your large hoop, hoop up a couple pieces of backing, then fill the area (in design shop) with 'boxes' 1" x 3" and fill each one with a different fill pattern so you can have a sew out to look at and see which fill might simulate a satin stitch. Maybe someone here that does quilt 'squares' has done something like this so they could help you out.

If you look at the code sheet, it will tell you what the largest letter is you can use for each font. If they want a monogram 14" tall, I would highly suggest a fill stitch. Your stitch will be much higher than a satin stitch but a satin stitch that tall will never stay together on a towel where people are wiping their gruppy hands all over it.

Hi Steve...have some more coffee...it's for a bedspread! LOL...
I'm having one of those days too...just sliced my thumb open pulling vinyl/paper through my plotter!
          Darn, those paper cuts hurt!

I would encourage them to consider an applique as opposed to a fill. A fill of that size will be stiff and will wash poorly.
the applique would be softer and you can match a nice material to the bed spread.
            would look much nicer.
We have done this many times.
Also it will be much quicker for you and cheaper for them.

              Cindy~

On that big of a monogram you can do a satin stitch however you will end up having to thin your columns down to make it work. You might be better off with a split satin stitch or doing an applique like Jerome mentioned and I believe Roland mentioned a filled stitch as well.
I just wanted you to know it can be done however using a satin stitch.

              Good Luck~

Thank you all very much. This is going to be a dumb question, but I have never done applique on my machine. I remember touching on it in my training, but is there an easy way to explain this on how to do it w/the 3 monogrammed letters? Or a tutorial site I could go to for more info. on this?

                Thanks!
