  • Beginner question on thread

I just learned there are different thread weights---so what is best to usually use. My mom-in-law uses Maidera poly on her Barudan and her lettering comes out crisp with nice sheen. I use Melco ARC (what came with new Amaya), with 65/9 needles for small lettering. Does thread weight make a difference here. According to Amann (Isacord) in Denver, they only have one weight. I just want my work to look it's best.

    Thanks "oh great ones"
    Have a great weekend!

If you are doing small lettering use a 60 weight with a 65/9 needle. For everything else I use 40 weight polyneon thread and a 75/11 needle which I prefer Titanium needles over the others.

I use mostly Madeira thread on my Amaya!

    Good Luck!

          Tricia,
Some folks might say that playing around with thread weights is an advanced technique. Although there are plenty of embroiderers out there doing everything from micro to large lettering using the industry standard 40 weight thread and consider themselves successful. Even if it's only because they don't know any better.
Mathematically, if you change the size of the thread to something smaller, then you should also consider changing the size of your digitizing to accomodate. This could mean changing density, columns width, and even underlay stitches, all depending on how small you are trying to get and what kind of stitch type you are using.
Although your embroidery shop can be considered your "kitchen". And the afore mentioned are your ingredients. Have fun and make your own recipes. Try and try again to see what works best for you.
You might just find something that works perfect for you even if you don't understand the finer aspects proper digitizing theory.
          Best of Luck,
          Ed
