I have many issues trying to sew out small lettering. Is there any advice on sewing out small letters?

  • #2
Yes! send them to the competition!

sorry...its been a very bad week and I had to have a laugh.
    I hate small lettering, period.
Rod, Herb, and Aaron I think have all the suggestions.
Use the 'search' engine here and find the 'threads' (haha) about how to do it.

Use a #9 needle and 60wt thread. Center run or no underlay using small stitch length. Lighten up the density.

In addition to Juli's suggestions beef up the column width a whole bunch. Sometimes if I am doing .10-.20" letters I will go up to 180-220% on column width and around 5-6 on density, no underlay or a short stitch length walk stitch. When you beef up the column width that much on the screen it looks horible and you can hardly read it but you will be surprised at how it sews out.

If you want me to look at you lettering send it to [email protected] and I would be happy to take a look in the morning.

I'm going to talk to the Melco Trainer going on our AMAYA Cruise and see if he is going to touch on this and if not I will probably set up a class with some tips on small lettering as it seems to be an issue quite often.

As juli said the 60 wt thread (Madeira carries it in lots of colors) with the 65/9 needle helps alot and actually you can use a 65/9 needle with 40 wt thread on small lettering and it helps but the 60wt makes a nice, crisp, clean looking embroidery.

You probably allready did this, but it is a good idea to make sure the alphabet you are using is digitized for that smaller lettering.
There is one called Oesco Block and it can do lettering down to .15", this alphabet is not included with the DesignShop software but it is one that is worth getting. Also, you would definitely want to use a 65/9 needle.

We always have a deal here at MelcoMart called a 'Stick-n-stitch' bundle, and it is the one of the best bargains we have. For $50 you get a box of bobbins, a new bobbin case, 3 packs of needles and any 'premium' alphabet you want. If you do this deal everytime you need bobbins then it is a really inexpensive way to add new alphabets to your software. You can view all the alpha's at www.melco-service.com/Alphabets

            Thanks for the info!
Is there a promo code that needs to used at checkout for the special?
            Thanks again,

Can you post the link to find the Stick N Stich bundle? Your link just goes to the melco service site...not to the bundle/ordering site.
I've been searching the melcomart site for ten minutes and there no visible link, button, sale special, nothing comes up on the search...
so as is typical of the site-it's useless.
If it IS in there somewhere then it is well buried!

Hmmmm.... I couldn't find it either. It's in the catalog (issue 8) in the bottom-right corner of page 30. No part number, though.

It is not on the website, but as pointed out it is on page 30 of the catalog.

To get this bundle just give us a call 800-877-4272 and mention that you'd like to order the stick-n-stitch bundle. It can't be combined with other discounts, but it is still a good deal on a new alphabet.

I tell my customers that want small lettering that nothing less than 1/4" would be legible. I usually use micro block (or mini block, I can't remember what it is called.) I don't even attempt to use the customer's special font at that size because it is a recipe for torn shirts.

I'm guessing that one has to buy the coats bobbins to get this deal? Or could I buy NEB bobbins with this deal??
